Good story by Joe Hill. Just finished last week. I wonder if different endings were or are considered when writing. I thought this one would end with Jude's dad passing and fighting Craddock on Jude's as penance for his crappy life, but that wasn't the case. I'm on to the Mr. Mercedes trilogy so that I can finally finish the Outsider.

Heart Shaped Box is my favorite Joe Hill and I'm glad it ended the way it did
I have yet to,r read that one, but I don’t think he had any ideas for an alternative ending.

I have yet to read "Heart-Shaped Box" but if you want to read another Hill book I would recommend N0S4A2, I can tell you it mixes many cool things together; Christmas, Vampires, Scrabble, License plates based on classic German horror films, etc.
Joe and Owen both went to Vassar, and they share the distinction of being Stephen King's son. But Owen seems to make a bigger deal out of it than Joe does. Joe never mentions his alma mater in interviews, and he changed his last name. That's what I've always loved about him-- his humility.
About halfway through it right now. I find it very good...dark, but good. And sai Hill definitely has his own voice.
