Hello Everyone! May the 8th inspire you!

Hi there! I'm a big fan of Stephen King's movie adaptions. I have only read one of his books, Thinner, but I plan to read many more! I'm hoping that by joining the message boards, I can get some new books for the shelves and strike up some conversations.

I just started pursing an MFA degree. I love to write and have recently been drawn to writing horror/suspense in the speculative fiction genre. My first task in the program was to choose a mentor text about writing from a list of suggested books. Mr. King's memoir, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft was on the list. Being the only author I recognized, and having this new shift of focus in my writing recently, I feel like King's will be the perfect mentor text on the craft for me!

I haven't even made it through the first introduction, and I immediately wanted to reach out to him and tell him that his writing truly resonates with me. Having read Thinner when I was in middle school, I've forgotten his voice and style- so I am very excited to have rediscovered him after so many years. His movies continue to influence my perception of what makes for a thrilling or suspenseful story.

I'm looking forward to discovering more of Stephen King's works and having some thoughtful discussions.

Cheers,

Welcome to the SKMB!
I went googling to see if there was anything up with May the 8th. All sorts of oddities. Give it a go -

Hello Holly,

Thank you for the welcome! I haven't googled "May the 8th" but I will now! I had a colleague post "May the 8th be with you" in a feed on another platform earlier today and chuckled, relating it to "May the 4th be with you" and while it sounded catchy, thought I'd create my own spin on it. I think of it like this.. any day in May can be a "May the [insert numerical value for the day here] ____this blank fill in with whatever___" - tomorrow I will say, "May the 9th delight you" :heheh:

I thoroughly enjoy oddities, so off to Google I go!
