My appearance here is probably long overdue, but I've made it all the same.
My name is Brett Chandler, and I hail from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada, and Mr. King is among my favorite writers. Has been for a long time.
First discovered him back in 1980, on a Greyhound bus traveling at night from Calgary to Red Deer, Alberta. My dad was working out of town, and my mom sent me up to visit him for a week during summer vacation. In my bag, she'd packed Night Shift for dad, and I think it was the blurb from John D. McDonald that caught my eye (even at 16 I was a precocious Travis McGee fan). A dark Greyhound turns out to be a remarkably good place to read "The Mangler"
Needless to say, dad didn't get that book for a couple of days and it remains one of my all-time fave short story collections. I was hooked.
Mr. King's work has always been inspiring to me. At his best he makes it look easy, and lately I've been getting more serious about writing myself. In fact, I'm re-reading On Writing right now to get my own creative juices flowing...
Thanks for having me!
