Kings books tend to have at least a mention if not full blown instances of sex, depravity etc. At what age is it appropriate to suggest King to a kid? Which books if any? My daughter will be 10 in August and read all the Potter series but they're pretty tame in comparison to King and just because you have the stamina to read a long book, does'nt mean she should start her journy to the Tower. I could'nt imagine her reading even Eyes of the Dragon as I recall some talk of sex between the old king and the queen in that book. Maybe Carrie? Cycle of the werewolf? Maybe puberty is the earliest? Thoughts?

...yeppur, that Thread will give you a good perspective.....as a dad, when one of my boys expressed interest in reading something, I told em to have at it and if they had questions about something-ask.....that's just my style though....I wasn't mollycoddled when I was young-as far as reading material, and I wasn't going to start with my kids.....

Really?

I would recommend Eyes of the Dragon without any hesitation at all.

If you think she is too young to be exposed to "some talk of sex" at the age of 10, then perhaps she could wait until she is 12 or 13.

Did Firestarter have a lot of bad language? Or The Dead Zone? I don't recall it at least.

My feeling is that as he went on he includes more bad language and sex references. His fellow writers even said 'Steve hasn't discovered sex yet' about his earlier books - it's as if he makes up for that in the later ones.

Generally I would say in terms of themes, I wouldn't recommend it under 15 which is when I read Salem's Lot and Night Shift.

I think some of the bad language is probably lost in the translation here. For example Arnette in The Stand is called 'pissant'. I don't actually have the translated version here, but pissant just means insignificant or small, so I would guess they translated it like that.

Is a word like pissant considered a swear word? I didn't get the word at first, but then if you split it in two you get it.

...If so, it's a very minor epithet.....few swear words seem off-limits in media anymore....books used to be the vulgar language repositories-but now?....they can be seen or heard almost anywhere.....this should not be considered progress.....and this being stated by a guy that work's in a men's prison and uses a lexicon of "blue" words interchangeably everyday......
