On his shell he holds the earth.
You could get name tags but instead of a name have them write the name of their favorite anything - band, song, movie, book, anything. That way you still have to ask for names.

Or they could write on a piece of paper how they know you and they get put into a bowl and you can draw them, read it, and then they have to guess who it is.

I have no idea. These all seemed like a really good idea in my head until I started typing them here.

I'm having a gathering later this month, and there will be a few different people who don't all know each other. Rather than turning everyone loose and letting them sink or swim, I thought I might have an activity or two so that we all at least have some idea who everyone is before we get down to eating.

They don't all know each other, but they do know (and voluntarily hang around) me, so they're the kind of people who'll be OK with some goofiness. It's not like a business gathering or anything. There will be a mix of adults and kids, all of them easy-going and fairly sociable once you get them going.

I do ice breaker games for the homeschool teens all the time, but I'm thinking there might be a whole world of more grownup-type stuff people do? Sadly, my "adult dinner party" experience is pretty limited. Among my circle, a party where everyone gets a chair is considered pretty fancy.
Consider this. Cut pieces of string into different lengths, some long, some short. Place them inside a bag and have each one present select a string.
The object is to take the string in one hand and feel slowly along its length with the other until the entire length of the string is covered. While the
person is doing this, she is expected to give her name, what she does and something interesting about herself. Of course, being the host, you go first.
