For my last birthday my wife bought me a ‘Kindle Fire’. She’s a big Kindle fan, but I’m not.
In fact, the only kind of reading-medium I enjoy is paperbacks. Hard-covers remind me of text books, and reading books on Kindle just doesn’t do it for me - I like to know I’m on page 358 out of 500 not 75% completed. I’m a book reader NOT a mathematician.
No, give me a good old fashioned paperback any day. I can scrunch it up, break it’s spine, crease it’s pages, and just get downright dirty with it!
Anyway, I’m now the proud new owner of a ‘Kindle Fire’ complete with a protective cover which I picked out myself - its design is a kind of abstract sunset on a background of various shades of blue (manly I thought).
It lay in a cupboard for about six weeks, until I finally took it out and had a tinker with it; I checked the footy scores, news headlines etc.
I was about to put it away again when I had an idea!?!
I’ve always loved travelling, but I prefer site-seeing whereas my wife; Mandy just likes sunbathing and chilling by the pool.
Subsequently, our holidays have always been a compromise. We can go sight-seeing, for a couple of days of the vacation, as long as we chill by the pool for the rest of the time, and the kicker is; we can only holiday in locations that are hot! No Baltic Cruises for me then.
In the same bed-side cupboard as the Kindle is stored I keep a book I got a few Christmases back entitled; ‘501 Must-Visit Destinations’. I frequently dip into it to get a feel for some of the places that I’ve yet to tick off my bucket list.
To cut a long story short, I am now - courtesy of my ‘501’ book in collaboration with ‘Kindle Fire’ and ‘You Tube’ - touring the world! (sad maybe, but as long as I enjoy it I’m not bothered what anyone else thinks - just a second, whilst I go and hang up my anorak)
I am currently ‘travelling’ through North America. I’ve done South Dakota, California, and I’m now in New England.
We went to a party last weekend, and during a conversation with one of my wife’s aunts, who is just about the most well-travelled person I know, I discovered that I knew more about San Francisco than she did, even though she’s visited it several times and I haven’t been there at all!
I got the impression she was slightly irritated by the fact, but I resisted the temptation to milk the situation, and instead just changed the subject.
Someone once said; ‘if you go there in the mind, you’ll go there in the body.’
Let’s hope so.
