I do too. He seems to have a knack for comedy. The SNL episode he hosted a few years back was hilarious.I love that he has a sense of humor!
I've seen those before, and I suspect a few are enhanced, but it still makes for good stories.
The following are harvested from proceedings I attended over the last few years. I have other collections elsewhere, but I'm not doing all that digging tonight.
Q The last one says that the accident was the result of an act of God. Do you think God intended for this to happen?
A I have not formed any opinion about God's intentions.
A It is not not my opinion that there are no circumstances under which an attorney can withdraw.
Q This Wisconsin company; who was the contact there?
A Tad Quierlot, or "Corlow."
Q Okay. Can you spell “Tad”?
Q Have you been to the doctor since your last visit?
A No.
Q How large a company was it?
A One.
Q Just yourself?
A Employee of one.
Q Other than you?
A No. Just myself.
Q Just yourself?
A Yeah.
Q Is she your wife or your ex-wife?
A She's, yes, one of my ex-wives.
Q Okay.
A I have a large collection
MR. DEFENDER: Objection. Counsel, how many times are going to repeat the question?
MR. INTERROGATOR: Until I get the answer I want.
Q Did you feel that you were lost at all?
A I wouldn't say I was lost. I didn't know for sure where I was at or where I was going.
And now, gripping topics seen in court reporters’ social media:
- If names are misspelled in the supplied caption, should we repeat the misspellings on the transcript title page?
- When quoting from a document that has improper capitalization, should that be mirrored in the transcript?
- If they say “number” followed by a number, do you prefer “Number” or “No.”?
- What’s an easy way in steno to write “entrepreneurial”?
- Do you use a parenthetical for a readback or do you put in the colloquy?
- How about that Oxford comma?
Kinda makes you want to come to our cocktail parties, huh?
As for keeping a straight face. I tell people that one of our early courses in reporting school is Invisibility 101. We're there to faithfully report the proceedings, not have an impact on them, unless it's required in order to do that faithful reporting (like saying, "I didn't hear that," or, "I can't make a record of that" when everyone is yelling at the same time).
The dynamics of my job have made watching talking head shows unbearable. I simply can't stand to have all those people constantly interrupting one another.
I think I saw her take a left turn at Albuquerque....and muttering something about staying ahead of Flake...Has anybody here seen a Sundrop...?
I have a.... ah, Fedex parcel for one "Sunny Drop".
