I loved "1408"! I thought Cusack was great - I'm a big fan of his anyway, but I thought he really was great in the role. Plus the movie itself was very freaky and disorienting, which was the point. I'm pretty fussy about adaptations of SK's works, and this one passed my usual "white glove test".

I love this movie! I actually saw it before I'd read the short story - I prefer the movie - probably because it is more 'fleshed out'. Just sent creeps down my spine for some reason-not many movies manage to do that!
Great movie! Cusack played the role of skeptic just right. My own favorite piece was hearing Karen Carpenter on a radio with no power source. Hypothetically if a "believer" was in 1408 he or she would have put up more resistance. Cusack crumbled after two happenings that his rational mind could not explain. I thought that this worked so very well in 1408....brilliant!
I watched 1408 for the first time yesterday. I loved it and the casting was perfect 
There were even a couple scenes that made me scream. I'm terrified of jump-out-at-you sudden appearances. Now I'm anxious to read the short story. Unless I missed it, the movie didn't explain why room 1408 was like it was so I'm hoping the story does

I caught the movie version with an alternate ending on some channel a few months ago. It was a weird ending. Great book and movie.
Read the short story last month. Really really liked it. Want to see the movie but hubby is "anti-horror" (don't ask how we make it work....) I just keep reminding him that SK is not all horror to calm him down .. but this one, no, he won't go near this one.....
Oh! Thanks for your post. I didn't know there was an alternate ending. I checked Wiki and I watched the version with the alternate ending (on the Syfy channel). I think I would have liked the original ending better.

Sometimes if I'm watching something really scary, I'll ask him to watch it with me but he's unsympathetic Getting a second tv saved our marriage lol
Read the story and watched the movie. I wasn't a big fan of either. The story in the book made me feel like I was on a bad acid trip. The acting was excellent in the film, the direction and script were good too. I just felt put off by the lack of special effects. This could've been great but I guess there were budget constraints.

I agree wholeheartedly, which is exactly why I loved it. Not that I have even done acid, but because it was so trippy and strange. Mr. Olen even says in the story itself that he describes the room as being filled with poison gas rather than haunted and Mike Enslen says that the room made him feel like he was stoned on bad cheap dope or forced to smoke strong hashish laced with insect poison. I think that is the exact feel SK was shooting for.

I love this movie. Kinda Hitchcock, kinda twilight zone, kinda everything and it works great. We found this at a flea market for $3, but $1 is quite the deal!
John Cusack is probably quite representative of SK's views. I find that the older I get, the more I can spot left wing rhetoric in all of King's work dating back to the 70s. I'm a total conservative myself, but I was not a teenager in the 60s or the 70s, so my experience is much different that King's and his peers. I totally understand why he has the political views that he does considering his generation. He's sort of the voice of that thinking without offending anyone who doesn't agree with him. I don't find him any less enjoyable when I don't agree with his political references, veiled and not-so-veiled. Heck, even Glen Beck (!?!) is a SK fan! Think on that for while .... smh.
Cusack could not be Martin Blank or Lloyd forever. He's gotten old like the rest of us. I still really like him and I thought he was really, really good in 1408.

It's funny, my friend's and I were just last night searching for a horror movie to watch and it brought us to a long discussion on 1408 and how it was really the last great paranormal horror that's come out. We ultimately landed on The Babadook, but 1408 would have been our choice had the three us not recently seen it already.
The Babadook was actually fantastic. If anything it was more entertaining to watch the main actress transform throughout the movie than the actual Babadook himself. It was classic horror. Definitely a refreshing change of pace after all these paranormal/found footage/slasher films we've seen in the recent years.

i agree that the story was a bit disorienting, but at the same time it made a bunch of sense, due to things happening VERY fast to the character within a very short amount of time. the movie i also agree fleshed the storyline out a bit. and i am pretty happy with both the movie and short story version.
