hi all. im currently reading the uncut version of the stand and I just read the part where there was a homesexual scene. it was quite eye opening to read this in a mainstream book today which some would consider pornographic in nature.
I mean when you read a 45 cal gun up someones you know what while he performs another act and if he upsets him hell blow up his sh** factory.
my question is for those of you who read this some 35 years ago what was the reception like. different times and I am assuming there was major attention brought about from this scene. I would be surprised if there were not protests etc. I mean its 1978 and homosexualality, pornography and violence all rolled into one. if the answer is nothing that would be shocking.

so the book police or any of that back then never said anything. critics didn't say anything. I mean I know it wasn't 1948 but still quite a long time ago to have that in the main stream. I just figured there would be so hoopla about it.
...the vast majority of those purchasing the novel are Constant Readers, and therefor may be somewhat shocked by the content , but not necessarily offended-because we are familiar with his styling's and wouldn't dream of raising some ridiculous hue & cry.....

I don't believe this particular scene was even in the original version of the Stand. This part involved Trashcan Man and The Kid and was one of the longer parts that King had to cut from the book in order for Doubleday to publish it. So, yeah, nobody made a stink about it because it wasn't in the book then. When King (and Doubleday) decided to release the Uncut edition in 1990 this part was put back in.

You're right. It wasn't in the 1978 version because the Kid was cut out. He was a sick character!

....it twasn't...and I knew that when replying...I have both versions, and though I don't think that particular inclusion was needed, I'm still glad he was free to re-include it...

I was happy that it was in there, too. I thought it showed that no matter what, even when the world as we know it is ending, that there are folks out there that won't/can't be saved and won't/can't change for the better.

The Kid is changed into an "dirty" old man who drives a big old Caddy and smoke cigars. The Kid does appear in the 78 edition as a corpse. Stu calls him "The Wolfman" since it appears he died fighting wolves, but there is no further explanation. Not until the 1990 edition. I have to say I don't like The Kid.

That wasn't in the '78 version--added to the rewrite in '90 (I think--not sure of the date on that one. It's not one of my favorites). It's awful, but no worse than what happens to Rose in Rose Madder. I'm not a fan of scenes of sexual violence for a variety of reasons, but those are two of the worst I've ever read.

The means for creating a media firestorm were not quite so advanced then as they are now.

Which is a nice way of saying that there were fewer avenues for what this generation would call "haters to hate."
