~ I really don't like it when an exact location isn't given in a book. I guess I'm 'old school' and really love the ones that take place in Maine. No, I'm not from Maine ~ not even an American. ;) But, I'm ok with the location being 'any place' ~ as long as it's 'some place'. Just my opinion.

Still ~ really love the story and, of course, couldn't put the book down. :) This will make a fantastic movie!

Welcome. I kind of like when a location isn't specifed because then people can't come on and complain you got the geographt wrong or something.

I am from the Midwest (med to large sized town). I would have liked a location too. I thought it being set a few years back was weird too, but I think he was playing up the recession No?

you know I've been wondering about that and the lack of detail and places.. And what I was thinking was maybe with that and some of the errors and inconsistencies that were noticed that may be the story was taking place on some other level of the tower.. In other words, not in our presence, not our world..

...the Indians are prominently featured and a reference made to being near the locale of that particular MLB club...other than that, I kinda grooved on the lack of GPS specific whereabouts...

The book mentions that the closest major league team in the Cleveland Indians, this makes it take place in Ohio due to the presence of Detroit, Pittsburg and Cincinnati. The presence of the Mingo Auditorium would kind of make it seem like it could be near Steubenville or Urbana. However, Steubenville would be closer to Pittsburg and Urbana to Cincinnati. Then again the Mingo Indians ranged all over Ohio at one point or another. The book takes place in Ohio, Columbus or north, east of Sandusky and west of Youngstown. Probably near The fictional town of Wentworth, home of The Regulators.

they are right on the lake so it has to be Cleveland

Mr Mercades says the Indians are the closest team. In the right direction, due south or southwest, you can be 100-120 miles from Lake Erie and still have them as the closest team.

He was being purposely ambiguous in the geographical location, other than that it was Ohio.

...I could smell the ambiguity, or maybe that's Lake Erie....:biggrin-new:

As a Clevelander, the story just did not ring true if it were in Cleveland. Just my opinion.

Parts of Rose Madder also took place in a fictional Great Lakes city. Maybe even the same one?

IMO not naming it Cleveland is the way out of using the location without having it "ring true". likely a better idea than, e.g. Buick 8, where he named the West PA locations but (as here) had no legit sense of the character of the place, might as well have stuck with Maine. so I think he was sidestepping that issue here by not naming Cleveland

Not being specific does help maintain the "flow" when writing so that it's not as important to make sure you've got every little detail right. He may have been thinking about keeping the nit-picking about how he got it wrong to a minimum if he had used a specific spot. Seems like the guy just can't win as he gets the nit-picking no matter what.

I just finished Mr. Mercedes and I loved it.

I guess I'm not as intelligent or observant as other members. I just sit back, relax, read the story and enjoy.

    I'm simple.
