Maj Sjöwall and her books about the police detective Martin Beck was extremely influential. They made way for the crime novel to be considered on the same basis as other literature. Her stories always had pieces of the society of its times inside, sometimes in a critical way. Without her later authors like Henning Mabkell, Stieg Larsson and several others are unthinkable. She died of a long illness at the age of 84 (not Coronarelated). I hope she has peace. Thank you for the books.

I've never read any of the Beck books, but I've seen every episode of the TV adaptation -- great stuff.
Without her and the Beck books the so called Nordic Noir genre in crime literature wouldn't have existed. But seriously Bev, if you like the Tv-Series, try the books. There are just 10 of them that she and her partner Per Wahlöö wrote between 1965 and 1975.
