Okay. First, please excuse if this missive didn't end up exactly where I'd intended it to. This is my first post on the site. Like so many of you, I'm "just 'nuther SK fan," thus, my "handle."
More than chicken needs "doing right," and it's a shame that too many authors seem to have to go thru a horrendous "rite of passage on the old silver screen" before their stories are finally captured correctly and not bleeped up by egoists who cannot recognize the word "atmosphere," much less spell it.
Such a shame this didn't happen with S.K.'s short story "The Mangler," because, as we've seen with films such as "Shawshank" and "The Green Mile," gems await the faithful, provided that we somehow endure the slings and arrows that pincushioned us previously.
Each of us has that "top ten list of tales we'd most like to be stranded on a desert isle with," and SK's short story "The Mangler" is one of those top tenners that reaches right down the ol' gullet, grabs a handful of vitals, twists and yanks vigorously, and takes you on that "oh, wow" ride that true horror fans love, but may only experience perhaps a double handful of times in a lifetime.
Sadly, the movie can't lay the same claim, or even a whiff of it.
Yep, I'd like to see that movie remade such that the results come mucho closer to the mind imagery and emotional roller-coaster ride that the short story achieved.
