Mother Abagail

Does anyone else feel Mother Abigail is annoying? I'm sorry, but she's possibly the most grating character King has ever created. I'm re-reading The Stand, and I've never actively liked or disliked her, but sheesh! This time... Ugh. Her off-handed comments judging Democrats, Catholics, young people, etc. as well as the way she carries herself in every situation get to be a bit much. She's just so....pompous. I know she
disappears late in the novel because she feels she's prideful
    and she is!

I just feel this character would have been written different (i.e. better) had she been written later on in King's career. And this is honestly sad to me because I feel the other characters in The Stand are SO well-written.

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I'm just curious if ANYONE here doesn't like--or at least gets annoyed by--Mother Abigail. Surely I'm not the only one!

    No, I wanted her.

And the chicken dinner she worked so hard for.

And wanted her to get jelly for the peanut butter sandwich, that she forgot.

Oh God, then the pork! :icon_eek: Took me quite awhile to eat that again.
(except bacon) Nothing that even looked like it was ever alive.

I must be hungry. say sorry.

Whoopie Goldberg could have played her well.

No offence to the actress that did it excellent.

    Ooops, Book.
She was just tired , worn out and sick of everyone taking everything.
And now she has to move.

    And suddenly, everyone adores her.

Yes! And, like, I totally get that she was born in 1882 and had a different way of looking at things than young adults in 1990--I get that and respect it. But sometimes she is a bit much.

How so? She was just there and made to move away. I'd be pretty pissed too.

I cannot figure out how she ate the chicken then put in her teeth to talk to the new guests of hers.

...guess I'm on my own then...even though her personality could be a bit much, she is one of the most memorable and well fleshed out "real" people he's ever created...

I liked her when I first read the book but not so much after. I found her annoying.

I know a guy who is one of the workers at Special O bowling. He says he can eat almost anything (except maybe apples) and he has no teeth :umm: He must have very strong gums is all I can figure :saturn:

Yes my dear. She did thank God for the bowel movement. How anal-retentive is that?

I quite liked Mother Abagail. Frannie, on the other hand, is a whole other story.

Nope, not on your own at all. :) Being from the south, she reminded me of many an elderly person I know of.
