I just finished Needful Things. There was lots of repetition in the plot as King details Gaunt's manipulation of Castle Rock folk into committing anti social acts, although the acts differ the set up is similar and they are taken over with no resistance. My question is were these Needful things reals needs? there is a distinction between needs and wants ( as the Rolling Stones pointed out and Dylan too). Gaunt is taking a part of you, selling some primal need back; Alan's need to know whether his wife not wearing a seat belt was suicidal or forgetful falls into this category but a desire for a fox tail, a fishing rod, sunglasses are wants not vital needs. Writers are always told to give their characters needs and wants, and that they should differ but I was confused. Can anyone enlighten me?
