Hi guys.

I am going to be publishing a horror novel in the near future, but I really don't know what name to go by. Both names in the poll are variations of my real name.

Which one sounds better - or more like a horror author?

This is well and truly driving me nuts. Still, who better to ask than avid horror readers! =D

Rather juvenile I admit, but whenever I see the name Seymour, I chuckle thinking back to my grade school years and that old name joke... Seymour Hiney.

So I’d go with Matt Douglas.

Good point, but the fact that Seymour puts those thoughts in your mind could make it stand out or be memorable, no?

Or it could be seen as amusing, which would make people less likely to take the book seriously.

You see my dilemma here! :(

Here's my take on it: in the big, bold world of social media (which publishers rely upon to sell their stuff as budgets for advertising have plummeted) there are few secrets. And it's an enormous PIA to keep your 'real' world separate from your public personna. Ever tried to use a FB 'page' off your personal account (which most indie and newbie writers do)? It's not easy or fun. Unless you have staff (like our lovely Moderator), it's your job to shove your face in the faces of everybody else in the world, and it's hard to keep stuff separate. Plus, people will ferret out your real name anyway, if they really care (and you hope they do).

When I signed my first contract, I faced that issue. In googling my highly unique name (lol), the first six pages were all me, down to my home address and phone number. I thought that wasn't fair to my family, so I chose a pseudonym (couldn't even use my maiden name, since that is unique, too). Now that a few years have passed and I'm not so involved with my church (addy and phone # came from bulletins), I'm not so 'findable'…but it didn't really matter anyway. Real name was attached to my pseudonym very quickly, so it was a waste of time and energy trying to keep track of everything and what was posted under what name, and who I chatted with personally, and what locations I referenced… Silliness. Can't change now, because I've been 'branded' (God help us all. I hate marketing with a passion).

Anyway. My 2 cents. Take what you want, leave the rest, and best of luck :)

Something tells me no one will take a book written by Flat Matt seriously!

Still, I don't suppose it will be taken seriously regardless. ;;D
Douglas makes me think of Kirk and Michael.
Seymore makes me think of Phillip Hoffman. And sounds like See-More.
If you're looking for a name that nobody else has, your screen name stands out. ;)
Especially if you add a second T to Flatt.

This poll is not quite as conclusive as I hoped it might be!:a11:

My real (full) name is Matt Douglas Seymour. So if I called myself Matt Douglas, I would be using my own name... kind of.

It's not that I want to remain anonymous or separate my personal details from my writing. I really just want to write under a name that sounds more memorable or befitting of a horror author.
