Here's my take on it: in the big, bold world of social media (which publishers rely upon to sell their stuff as budgets for advertising have plummeted) there are few secrets. And it's an enormous PIA to keep your 'real' world separate from your public personna. Ever tried to use a FB 'page' off your personal account (which most indie and newbie writers do)? It's not easy or fun. Unless you have staff (like our lovely Moderator), it's your job to shove your face in the faces of everybody else in the world, and it's hard to keep stuff separate. Plus, people will ferret out your real name anyway, if they really care (and you hope they do).
When I signed my first contract, I faced that issue. In googling my highly unique name (lol), the first six pages were all me, down to my home address and phone number. I thought that wasn't fair to my family, so I chose a pseudonym (couldn't even use my maiden name, since that is unique, too). Now that a few years have passed and I'm not so involved with my church (addy and phone # came from bulletins), I'm not so 'findable'…but it didn't really matter anyway. Real name was attached to my pseudonym very quickly, so it was a waste of time and energy trying to keep track of everything and what was posted under what name, and who I chatted with personally, and what locations I referenced… Silliness. Can't change now, because I've been 'branded' (God help us all. I hate marketing with a passion).
Anyway. My 2 cents. Take what you want, leave the rest, and best of luck
