Sgt. Stubby the dog

Adopted as a stray by 102nd infantry of Massachusetts in 1917, Stubby would see action in Europe and become a bonified war hero. In his duty as a sentry, Stubby was gassed twice, hit by shrapnel, and even captured a German spy by holding onto his pants until American soldiers found him.

Later, he accompanied his wounded master Corporal J. Robert Conroy to hospital after a particularly heavy offensive, becoming a one dog morale booster for the other injured soldiers. He received various awards (including a Purple Heart) and, upon his return home, was made a lifetime member of the American Legion, the YMCA, and the Red Cross.

He passed away in 1926 and is preserved at the Smithsonian Insitute.
