I didn't want to like any of the posts because it didn't seem appropriate here. I only hit like on one because of the quote there. He seemed like such a lovely man, who overcame so much to become President of his country and didn't seem to show any bitterness. He will be missed by so many around the world.

Somewhere over the rainbow
I just heard that all flags in the US should be lowered to half-staff in his memory. I can't remember the last time that happened for a non-US citizen.

:(
President Mandela of South Africa has died

And, although not unexpected, even so - I cried.
Started life a warrior; his nation's righteous spear.
Faced the gallows on Apartheid without trace of fear.
Sentenced him to Robben Island; said he'd serve for life.
After they imprisoned him they, then, harassed his wife.
Twenty-seven long and lonely years 'til his release
Yet, somehow, he managed to emerge a man of peace.
Spoke of Reconciliation as a way to heal;
Fought to make his vision of a Rainbow Nation real.
When he came to Boston - up and dancing on the stage -
Thanked us for divestment, I felt we had turned a page...
Put our ugly, racist past behind us; cleaned the slate.
It felt like Mandela's benediction of my state.
Every country's flag will fly at half-staff when unfurled
For the father of his country... Hero to the world.

Very unusual, but entirely understandable like you said Sunny. I had to look it up, but I think the last time that US flags were at half-staff for a foreign born world figure was for Pope John Paul II.
I should probably clarify that I think it is fine to fly them at half mast to honor the man
.....but not sure I agree because he might not have wanted the show

I dunno if this is s'possed to go into the Hot Topics section or this one, but I'm gonna let my brain fart if I'm wrong and go with this one.

Anyways, that's not the point. As many of you should know, Mr. Nelson Mandela passed away not too long ago, and he was a great man. One of the few men in political history that I actually respect (others being J.F.K. and Abraham Lincoln). This man spent twenty years in prison for his country. He wrote a memoir (I think it's a memoir) called: Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom that I think I'll read very soon. I just wanted to pay my respects.
