The idea of song adaptations of stories fascinates me
With all the 50’s rock references in Christine, I would love to see someone make a song about the book in a ‘50’s surf rock style
I can also picture an instrumental adaptation of The Stand, no lyrics involved, just the music tells the story. I could see it being split into chapters just like Rush’s 2112, different instruments could represent different characters.
I can picture Flagg being represented by 40’s progressive jazz and swing music with a bass behind it to represent his charismatic but sinister demeanor. The best song I can compare it to is Black Friday by Steely Dan, the song is pretty groovy but there’s a sinister sounding jazzy guitar riff underneath it. A groovy loud saxophone playing while a quiet guitar rythm is played is what I’m thinking, the saxophone being husband personality, the guitar representing his true intentions.
Harold Lauder could be done with a harmonica. I always feel like the harmonica is a pretty underrated instrument, just like Harold fancies himself an outcast of society. Alternative folk rock harmonica rythm
Anyways so I imagine the Stand could work as an instrumental concept album, where each song represents a larger segment of the book. With smaller leeway songs in between (like for the Lincoln tunnel trip Larry has to make)
Larry Underwood is definetly a poppy ‘50’s-‘60’s sounding surf rock guitar similar to what The Beach Boys sound like.
It could either work as an album or a 40+ minute long instrumental. It’s be an interesting concept although I don’t know if you could legally release a record adapting someone else’s novel. It’s a neat idea though
