Ok, first off this is about a non-SK book that I've just discovered. "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children", to be exact.

It may be a book geared to young adults, but it was so much fun I couldn't put it down. And of course when I was done I had to go see what they were doing with the movie. Tim Burton is directing it, and I was expecting something good.

But no. He's taken a number of crucial characters and changed them drastically. Why, why, why does Hollywood insist on doing this?! It's possible to bring a book to life and stick to the story, I've seen it done, so why don't they??? Why this stubborn insistence on making it different from the original material? Isn't that the biggest slap in the face an author could take? Here they've spent all this time and energy, bringing their idea to life, and someone else comes along and messes it all up. It's just like the bully in the third grade that always destroys the smart kid's project before it can get graded. (At least, that's how I see it, but we all know what a purist I am. :facepalm_smiley:)

Anyway, there's the rant. My query is this: does anyone have an idea of how I could go about researching the types of old photos found in the book? I've seen enough old photos from that era to have wondered already about the kind of freaky crap people were up to back then, but after reading "Miss Peregrine", I'm even more curious. Think about it; what if weird stuff happened all the time back then? What if it was normal to the people of that time? What if there's photographic evidence of psi powers and strangeness all over the place? Our collective psyche has already dismissed the possibility of magic. So much so that we could be looking right at something fantastic, and would simply call it a hoax and walk away.

So there we are. I discovered a new book and a new curiosity at the same time. Back to our regularly scheduled programming...
