Bowie's movie career never really took off for some reason. Even with all his ch-ch-changes he was still Bowie. Maybe it was hard to get beyond that in the movies. "The Man Who Fell to Earth" is a flawed masterpiece. A kind of art film in which Bowie was great. The movie itself is lacking though. If it had been directed by someone like Kubrick in might have been a classic. He was great in The Hunger. I understand "Labyrinth" has become a minor cult hit among younger girls.
I was watching a western on cable a few months back and low and behold Bowie played the bad guy. I can't recall the name of the movie but it was totally bizarre to see him in that context. He was apparently great in his role as the Elephant Man on Broadway.

He was also quite good in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

The Man Who Fell to Earth is weird and hard to follow but I still think it's awesome. There are a couple of versions of this movie and you have to make sure you get the long version, not the American theatrical release. The long version is still a challenge but it makes much more sense than the short version.

Most people who watch that one will probably hate it these days. It is a bit primitive, too artsy etc. Not for the mainstream Star Wars crowd, but Bowie was outstanding. And the story is interesting. "Under the Skin" with Scarlett Johansson was a bit similar in theme and style. Interesting Faber book as well.

....soundtracks and DVD's all over Ebay honey.....
I have all my albums and VHS and DVD's and posters and memorabilia boxed up in our garage, but I can't find them anywhere! If they have been thrown out, I will be so gutted. (I live with a 'throw everything out once-in-awhile' person. )

The postage to NZ is ridiculously high, I'll keep searching for them and if they are not here, then will check out local secondary markets. Some of this stuff will be irreplaceable though.

I can't find my copy of this... oh lord I'd like to see this movie again.
Losing him makes me also miss who I was back then. I think his death has made a couple of generations mourn not only him, but our lost/passing youth too?
This film is brilliant, beautiful. Much of it filmed in and around Auckland. Even my Mum, not a fan of Bowie really, said what a good actor he is. She bought it on VHS, whilst on holiday in Australia one time.

I used to have two really old Bowie albums, the ones pre-Ziggy Startdust, on vinyl. sold them to a guy at Real Groovy Records for ten dollars each when I was young and broke.

Bowie's eyes were both blue. One was left permanently dilated after a friend punched him in the face. They were fighting over a girl - and remained lifelong friends despite the tiff. Years later, Bowie thanked him for giving him the signature look.
Look closely and you'll see it's not the iris, it's the pupil.

the start is quite blood curdling, the suicide scene. A very strange, haunting film. Some of it filmed around Remuera and its leafy surrounds.

I wish I could go back and relive those days, and yes, do some of my future different!! Just some.
