Something very scary that happened near my hometown in the 70's.

You might have heard about this because it was a famous case but in the 70's less than 10 miles from where I lived a girl scout troop was brutally murdered. I grew up hearing about this event and it always scared the crap out of me, especially listening to some of the full blood Native Americans who thought that a shape shifter did it. This was literally like something straight out of IT or Black House. There's a book about the murders but it's hard to find, my mom had a copy and she had to pay a couple of hundred bucks for it. Google Oklahoma Girl Scout murders and you'll see what i'm talking about.

....I could easily see how the Wendigo legend could have been brought into play-but this still sounds like (sub)human hate.....

The guy they originally arrested most likely did it, but the stories of the supposed shape shifter always frightened and fascinated me, especially since I lived out in the country surrounded by the woods. Thinking back on the stories I heard it really does sound like they were describing a wendigo.

....reads like the evidence was overwhelming, yet the jury acquitted.......hmmmmmm......

I had actually planned to write a novel very loosely inspired by the girl scout murders, I even put the main character of that story in the first novel I tried to write but when that fell apart I kind of lost interest. I just can't believe something so horrible could have happened near where I lived. I mean, the town I grew up in was not a very nice place but it's hard to fathom a bunch of little girls being murdered near there.

I'm amazed Blumhouse hasn't yet hired some 15 year-old with his cellphone to make a found-footage "film" based on this. It'll cost about $300, they'll make a mint and spawn sequels until 2030 or so.

Speaking of scary things in your hometown during the 70s, this guy was a deputy in my county when I was a kid. I remember when he was arrested and the trial. It was quite the circus for a while. To make things even weirder, the serial killer's defense attorney ended up marrying the serial killer's wife when the trial was over.

The scariest thing that's happened near a place where I or a family member lives, is a few years ago a drunk driver barreled into my Grandparent's yard and hit a tree, causing it to topple over and kill him (I think that's what happened). Luckily no one else was injured except the drivers fatality. It's pretty spooky considering a guy died a pretty horrible death on the lawn of people I'm close to.
