Symbol above "Give me what I want and I'll go away"

Just watched this mini-series for the first time. Great ending. One piece left me puzzled.

Throughout the series several characters draw/paint/scribble the words "Give me what I want and I'll go away". Each one has a little left-facing hook type symbol above the first words. I thought we'd get a more conclusive explanation for this.

Does this represent a shepherd? Does the town represent a flock? images.jpg
