Thanks all for the well-wishes. The green lights of the Tet shine bright.
The irony of having a house fire during such heavy flooding made the papers. The fire claim amid all the flood damage caught the attention of the insurance adjuster, who's already come and gone. They're just waiting for the official word from the fire marshal about the cause (outlet) tomorrow (hopefully) and they'll process our paperwork. Remarkably fast, I think.
We and the surviving critters are couch surfing with my daughter and son in law in the meantime. They're generous with their apartment, but we'll all be glad when it's over. They have so little space of their own. I feel like a total burden.
Hopefully the rebuild will be quick.

Speaking of rebuilds... it looks like ye olde cantina got a fresh coat of paint and a sweep out. Looks good. A few plants and books on the shelf and the place will be good as new.
I have some elephant ears I could bring...

Can you take your money and rebuild somewhere else, away from next-door-neighbor-barking-dog guy?

Charming fellow, he. While every other neighbor on the block is patting us on the back, offering us their sofas, praying for us and baking up casseroles, he rolls by in his pickup, shoots us the stinkeye, and doesn't say a word. Not so much as a wave.
We're insured, but even so, rebuilding on the spot is all we can really afford. It'll be fine. Neighbor-doosh can deal with his own karma.

maybe in rebuilding you could have the side of the house that is closest to him soundproofed with insulation etc...

The dogs are gone. He was convicted of violating the ordinance that covers such things and court make him move the pups. Now they're holed up in a kennel he built outside the city limits, left alone in the elements while he still lives next door to me. He goes out there to feed them and take them hunting. That's it. I hope he plans to build a house out there as well and just go. Those poor dogs deserve so much better. It's not their fault he's such a jerk.

Wanted to write earlier by had a problem with my 'reply' icon. Very sorry to hear about your home and pets. What a
terrible thing to happen to such wonderful people. Nice to hear your (no personality) insurance adjuster has been
already and hope that cheque is cut very soon. I am sure you are not a burden to your family, I wouldn't be
thinking about that. Take care of yourselves and God Bless.
