I can't wait for the games to begin.
Rio's a mess but the Olympics planners (and city) need to have a chance to prove they can get their sh*t together.

Literally.

Look for me at the Opening Ceremonies. I'm almost up to my wrestling weight (Heavy Jumbo Division) so I'll be shoveling in the potato salad while walking in with my teammates. I should be easy to spot.

I only hope that all the swimming is done in pools that have been properly chlorinated.

That won't help those who swim in open water (I think triathlon athletes do) or the many athletes in various kinds of boats. How do you shut your mouth when there is splash back? How do you race when you are more worried about splashing water from your oar instead of winning? And isn't beach volleyball one of the sports? No way is that sand "clean" enough to run barefoot (not sure, maybe they wear beach shoes), but they do fall in the sand, sometimes even do a face plant. And an arm a human arm washed up on a beach.

Maybe someday, the Olympics will recognize eating as a sport. I think hot dog eating is more entertaining than synchronized swimming. ;-D

I'm afraid that the awarding of the games has more to do with kickbacks and corruption than anything else. I'm think that the IOC is a lot like FIFA.

I don't actually understand what the hosting company expects to "get" in return for the kickbacks. I think it was last summer my city hosted the PanAm games. I was not impressed before and I was less impressed during. I think some money is given to the hosting city to help build what is required. Here, I do think that money was put to proper use. Pools were built, which are now getting use, especially for people training for competition. Olympic Village (or whatever it's called for PanAm) is supposed to be getting repurposed as low-income housing.

But it cost us more than we made, including tourists. Our mayor who had a grand old time telling residents to book their vacation during the games and stay home so as not to add to the traffic, decided to throw our city's hat in the ring for the Summer Olympic Games. Fortunately, the neighbouring cities, who also had venues and traffic, wanted actual numbers before agreeing to back him. (I don't think numbers is one of our mayors strong points...well nothing is actually.)

Anyway, PanAm is a LOT cheaper to run than Olympics, and it was costly here. So, I just don't understand why places fight to get them any more.

....I heard on ESPN this morning, that the Olympic organizers are advising the competing swimmers to keep their faces out of the water!.....

Haven't we had a couple young people die this summer from swimming? Because of microbes or some such thing? I know I have the details wrong, but swimming in nasty water is extremely dangerous. Especially with nasal mucosa, eye mucosa, mouths, open cuts, wounds, scratches, zits -- any break in the skin could allow some nasty bug in.

I just hope that all the Olympians make it out alive. Just sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Yeah, really - what if you are one of the swimmers who pretty much has to put their face in the water? How do you breathe?
I guess you could try the nose, but it seems to me most of the swimmers use their mouths.

As far as the safer chlorinated water goes, how about Michael Phelps? This is going to be his 5th Olympics. He still has a shot to win an event or two which is incredible for someone in their 5th Olympics. The experts think there are two events that he has a shot in but the competition is tough and he's not quite as fast as he once was. No matter how he does, him being there 5 times is remarkable.
