Snap trap. Traditional one made by Victor. Use peanut butter for bait. Have rubber gloves handy for clean up.

Live traps work well too, but if you do use one make sure you take the critter MILES away from your home. Little bugger will just come back if not.

I won't be using a live trap..... a friend of mine caught a rat in a live trap once. Took it about 20 miles into the country and turned it loose.
Dang thing came back and brought friends.

+1 on the tradtional type traps. But I use plain old American cheese, as they don't seem to like any of the finer types. Smush and mold the cheese into the bait holder so its not loose where they can take it and run, as they can be pretty crafty. They do carry diseases and parasites, so it's best not to mess around and just be done with them IMO.

I've seen suggestions to wrap the bait in a cutting of old pantyhose. The theory is that it's teeth will hang up on the hose so it can't steal the bait and run.

Try going down to the local bird sanctuary and trapping an owl or eagle. Let that loose into your home and the mouse will either be dinner or be scared shytless and skedaddle.

Just remove all breakables from your shelves before letting the winged beasty have at it.
We have a red tailed hawk in the neighborhood.....it could take off with my dog.

Live trap-- offer to local pet shop ( don't ask questions as to what they'll do with it--see OoO post #6)
Do not use any poisons if you have critters. They are life threatening.
20 miles is not enough space.
Once you have it gone, purchase some Essential Oil Lavender (health food stores sell it). Place several drops on a cotton balls and place them anywhere you think a mouse may enter. Watch bird feeders or any left over foods/ dumpster- trash cans.
It's cold they are searching for warmth and food.

if all else fails- local feed store, heavy duty snap trap. (cruel)
Maybe Buckwheat and Pyro can help??
Good luck!
