Last night the girls had Daisies/Brownies meetings at 6:30 so I had to take them for fast food for dinner. We come out of the Taco Bell and find a few people standing in the parking lot staring up in the sky. There are these little glowing dots high in the sky flying in a V formation headed from our neighborhoood toward town, but slowly, not like airplanes, and they are not making any noise. Kind of creepy but peaceful. I take out my phone and start video recording it. My kids are jumping up and down and squealing but all the adults just seem mesmerized.
This scared-looking young man comes up to me and says, "What do you think those are, man?" I think he thought it was the end of the world or something. I say "Candle balloons," and he says "Huh?" I said you can make these balloons with clear plastic bags or paper and you light a small candle and the hot air makes them go up. He looks relieved, disappointed and a little embarrassed.
A bunch more went up so I figured they were launching them from our ballfield near our house, so we drive up there and found them. I thought it would be a bunch of kids but it's actually adults having a party at the nearby picnic pavillion, maybe a wedding reception celebration or something. We watched them launch a few more and we left.
Jillian says, "What happens if one of those land on your house, Daddy?" and I say "I guess your house could burn down." She frowns and says "Those should be illegal." I would guess they are illegal but am not sure.
