There are movies I can just flat watch anywhere, anytime, where if I'm browsing through the channels and see it, I can stop and watch it, period.

Another group is movies on our shelf that we can just pick up at any time and watch when one says, "You want to watch...?" "Sure!"

It's a long list.

Franchises:

Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. We still go back to 1977 and how we were blown away by an experience that had never been seen by moviegoers before. We saw it four times in that first month. I am not kidding.

Indiana Jones. But that's Nos. 1 and 3. 2 and 4, no.

Harry Potter. Any of them anytime. My personal favorite is The Prisoner of Azakbhan (sp?).

The Bourne
whatever, 1 through 3. I start anywhere there, and I'm immersed. And they stitched 2 and 3 together so well.

Avengers stuff.

All burned into the family culture (along with a few previously mentioned):

The Princess Bride.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Aliens.
Murder by Death.
Clue.
Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Star Trek: First Contact. Mini-controversies fly among Trekkers, but this was our fave ST movie, yes, even ahead of Wrath of Khan. But I can also plug in The Voyage Home anytime.

Comedies:

Some of the National Lampoon stuff. Animal House, Vacation, Caddyshack. (I don't know that Caddyshack was National Lampoon, but it sure seemed like it.)

Gracious Host Stuff:

The Green Mile.
The Shawshank Redemption
.

Sci-fi done right:

Jurassic Park.
Terminator 1 and 2.

Off the beaten path:

The Usual Suspects. Brilliant, and Kevin Spacey at his best.
LA Confidential. One of my favorite movies of all time. I'm in awe of it, direction, acting, production values, story, the gamut.
The Fugitive. A TV show done right, by gum. Finally! Great story.
Bull Durham. Every scene filled with great lines, chemistry, and often relatability.
Field of Dreams. Sure, call me a sentimentalist. "Do you want a catch?" *sniff*
The Shadow. Alec Baldwin, never better.

Classics:

Casablanca.
To Have and Have Not.
The Maltese Falcon. (So we like some of the Bogart stuff. Sue us.)
The Incredible Shrinking Man (if you dispute that this is a classic, I'm ready to fight)

That's all off the top of my head, without doing any checking. I'm sure there's more, lots more. Like I said, it's a long list.

I'll see your four and raise you 96. Maybe more. I made friends with the theater manager (which was right next door to where I worked) and would go after work almost every day. Still love to watch them, too.

One I haven't seen mentioned and, coming off the July 4th holiday is very apropos, is 1776. We love it and sing along as well as recite much of the dialogue.

I must note that in that month, we were in California, with me preparing to ship over to Okinawa after a three-week leave, where we visited family in Illinois. We saw it in Carlsbad, CA, saw it again, drove to Bloomington, Illinois, took other people to see it another couple times, and then I shipped out to Okinawa.

We were that blown away.

Man, I get it! B and I drove down to L.A. to see Empire because it opened there 2 weeks before Vegas. Those movies tap into our collective subconscious and punch those buttons! Still and always :love_heart:

I missed a genre.

Westerns

Silverado. Probably our favorite Western. Just all the cliches (except for Indians, which is good) done right.
Open Range. Again, cliches done right, but with grit.
Tombstone. Just a fun watch, great cast, Val Kilmer steals it as Doc.

Add to the Off the Beaten Path

The Big Lebowski. We're even quoting it quite a bit nowadays, but that's for another section of the forum.

One that I don't think was mentioned is PREDATOR. The 1st one. I can recite that whole movie. The score is also A1. Just have to say one.

Remember bro, number 10 tonight. Same kinda moon, same kinda jungle. Whole platoon 32 men chopped to meat we walk out just u and me, not a scratch, not a f#@$%^ scratch. Whatever got u gonna come back and when it does I'm gonna cut ur name in two, gonna cut your name in two.

Of course the text doesn't do it justice. The way Bill duke delivers it is what makes it awesome.

Someone listed Memento up there. That's a really cool movie.

My question is do you memorize that one forwards, or backwards? :)

The first time I rented it, I ended up watching it 3 times in 2 days. I loved it that much. Somebody walked off with my dvd copy, but at least Netflix has it. Memento holds a permanent place in my queue. At least until they lose the rights to it.
