I'm reading the "The Dark Tower" series and I'm sooo obsessed with it
I started reading it several years ago, I read "The Gunslinger" and started "The Drawing of the Three" back then, but put it away... And now, after seeing the movie I decided to try reading it again. Now I'm on the second half of "The Waste Lands".
I enjoy it so much. I can't put it away... and I even dream about it at night! Crazy ;-D

Today I finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
Heavily recommended by a lot of people on the various book forums I lurk on, I bought the paperback and jumped in with zero knowledge, kinda went in blind you might say.

All I can say is "Wow" literally just wow.
Totally blown away, a beautiful, touching, haunting yet magical story that just kept on giving.
Easily one of the best books I have read, ever.
I was going to start a new book today, but suffering from a pretty severe book hangover and still thinking about life in 1939 Molching.

I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Gonna take a day or so to process it and then go on to either Drood by Simmons, or Head full of ghosts by Tremblay.

A few of y'all suggested Dark Matter by Blake Crouch so I gave it a try. I really liked it - maybe even better than the Wayward Pines trilogy. It's very imaginative and there's even a touching love story thrown in :)

Note: you don't have to understand quantum mechanics or the Schrödinger's cat paradox to enjoy the story. My knowledge of quantum physics is zilch and I enjoyed the story :)

i don't totally understand it either, although i think i've picked up basic concepts from some novels. hopefully the authors weren't taking too many liberties with the explanations. well, i mean quantum mechanics. shcrodinger's cat i'm down with, at least on the basic level.

I've decided to give Peter Straub another try (he's failed to impress me in the past when not aided by Sai King) and have just started In the Night Room. Fingers crossed.

You should try Ghost Story. I think it's his best one.

floating dragon wasn't bad. i ended up reading that one because of the shout out that king gave it in tommyknockers made it sound intriguing

Am I the only short story fanatic on here?
No, I enjoy the wizardry of a well written short story. I own several collections. Here are some writers that I like:
Megan Mayhew Bergman
Ron Rash
Michael Knight
Brad Watson
Eudora Welty
Flannery O'Connor
Lee Smith
Andre Dubus
(I'll try to remember this recommendation next time I'm in the library.)

I'm so excited you are a SS fan as well. I have Eudora, Flannery and Lee. I like annual collections: The O'Henrys, Best American Short Stories, Best of the South, Pushcart Prize stories - they have a smattering of different (many unknown) authors. And this one is debut stories, so first time published for all of them. T.C. Boyle and George Saunders are interesting short story writers: weird and hysterical.

I think these are some of the best short stories I've ever read. Or maybe I'm just in the right mood for them. But they are all positively perfect. Am I the only short story fanatic on here? I just can't get enough.

After that great review, I'm going to be on the lookout for The Book Thief MadBoJangles .
I prefer reading an author's short story collection first. You can really see the creativity and skills an author has when they have to grab you quick, hold you and deliver a satisfying ending in a short story. I own tons of short story collections on many authors, but have never read any of their "popular" novels.
