I was fishing around for something to read yesterday and found a copy of The Secret History (Donna Tartt) that I'd forgotten I bought. So far I like it. Her writing reminds me of another time--19th century, maybe--and is quite similar to John Irving at the top of his game. I think it's fair to say that Tana French's odd students in The Likeness owe a lot to Ms. Tartt's odd Greek students in this book.
I thought that was a given. Frenchs the Likeness is unthinkable without Tartts , do i dare say masterpiece.French has managed to capture part of the atmospherer that Tartts book is full of in every page. It is, i think, her best book. Better than the The Little Friend And he Gold Finch. French just added a murder to the mix.

I haven't. This is my first book by her. I know it got massive acclaim last year, but the scenario didn't really appeal. Is it worth a read?

I got lost a few time within the story- but soon realized it was "me" and not giving my full attention as I read. The ending blew me away. Made me re think the entire book, and as I look back, I see all the part fall into place. If you have the time, do give it a read. You might be surprised with what you take away from it.

Holy gawd! After reading Casual Vacancy, I had a dream about it last night. I never dream about books! I dreamt that I was the character who had a crush on the guy in the boy band. I brought him to Florida with me and it was going to be a hurricane there. We had this beautiful room. I realized he was Justin Beiber and also realized I did not want to be with a youngster for pity's sake. I was looking for a gun to shoot him when I woke up. Have mercy!

I thought the first 700 pages were great, but the ending left me annoyed. Mr Iles portrayal of the period had me hooked and I would gladly have kept reading about it. IMO, the end of the story was a real let down.
I somewhat agree with you, but then thought about the trilogy aspect, and decided maybe that was the reason for the loose ends. But, for sure, it left you hanging on certain points. The ending was very sudden. I didn't so much feel it was implausible as I felt it was just rushed. At least this ending didn't bother me as much as the one of "Gone Girl"!

The woods are lovely dark and deep
I finished Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes. A fast paced and creepy read with subtle hints of the supernatural that build up to an original ending. And the author also manages to convey social media in all its glory and not lose any pace from the narrative.

I started Without Frontiers, The Life and Music of Peter Gabriel, by Daryl Easlea.

Liked your review of Broken Monsters so I ordered up a copy from my local branch and its coming across the county as I 'speak'.
