Just finished Haunted by James Herbert. It had the makings of a good book but didn't quite make it i think. To make it he should have been able to handle the several backstories in a better way to tie them in in a good way with the main story. King can do that, some others can do that but Herbert isn't quite successfull here IMO. The other three stories i read by him are told in a straight narrative without any backstories. I thought they were better.

I agree with that assessment.

James Herbert was a good writer, but it was kind of "diet horror." His books are incredibly easy to read though, which is often a good thing.

Has anyone read Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole books? If so, will I be lost if I read them out of order? I have The Redeemer here, which I think is the third book, and it looks interesting.
Depends on what you mean. The crime stories stand for themselfes but in some books Harrys personal development can get a bit confusing without knowing what caused that development. But if its just the third book you should be safe. Havent read all of them but some.

I didn't like it at all and only read it because I cared what Oprah had to say about books back then, but I no longer care at all about her suggestions . . . she doesn't read them. Depressing as smuck. It made me more mad than sad. Oh goodness . . .did that book get so much praise! I read others as well recommended by Oprah because I thought they would be good. Carp Crap. Advertising. In my opinion.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I thought that I was not smart enough because I have not liked any book she has suggested. I gave up listening to her after the second suggestion.

Liked your review of Broken Monsters so I ordered up a copy from my local branch and its coming across the county as I 'speak'.
I was not disappointed fer sure fer sure. Very fast read, loved the characters, and the blending in of the new and up coming social media and the sometimes devastating effects it creates was crisp and believable. Left with lots to think about.

Think my own copy of Revival is on the FedEx truck heading my way. YEA!!

Thanks for reminding me. :biggrin2:
Actually, I'm a member of a news site where my moniker is Ishouldbewriting. But I'm not alone. I've been asked before if I'm such-and-such, and since the person mentioned is a woman and I'm most definitely not...

On topic: I downloaded a sample of Revival, because I'm still uncertain as to which book to buy. I'm now torn between SK and Donna Tartt. If I was a Dalek I'd be the one spinning around wailing 'Emergenceee!' before exploding.

I am sure the download will make your mind up to get Revival. Beg for the Tartt book as a gift. Heck, gift yourself!
