Has anyone read Michael McDowell, in particular the Blackwater novels? They have recently come available for Kindle and I am intrigued by them. Somehow I missed this author when he was alive and publishing. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!
The only one of his that I've read was Candles Burning (the one finished by Tabitha King) That one was good

While it was good in its own right, it wasn't really a 'McDowell' book. I saw parts that were definately written by him and parts that I could tell were written by Tabby. I think it would have ended differently if he had finished it.

Finished the dystopian and read a "rich white woman" book, both for review. Now that THAT'S over (lol), I can get back to 11/22/63. I'm also reading The Likeness (Tana French)--her Dublin-based mysteries are so well done! I think I first found her through a rec by Joe Hill, and I'm glad I listened.

Just finished the Affair by Lee Child. A kind of prequel to his Jack Reacher-series. Taking place in 1997, 6 months before the first book in the series. Quick and easy to read but somehow the character doesn't grab me as i like them do to. But it was worth the read. But he will never make my toplist of fave authors. He is a good read, not a great read to me at least.

Recently read The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith/JK Rowling. Loved it. Loved Cuckoo's Calling when I read it too, can't wait for more Cormoran Strike stories! Next I don't know if I want to jump into Mr. Mercedes or read Wool by Hugh Howey. Still pondering it over...
I'd wait on Mr. Mercedes. It reminded me alot of the Galbraith character. IMHO.

Just finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. Book club discussion tomorrow night.

Before that, I read the Game of Thrones books up to what's happened in the show (ie: I just finished book 3) and for anyone else who may be thinking of that, BE CAREFUL! I had been planning for a while to read just the books that matched the seasons, but kept putting it off. So glad I did. While books 1 and 2 matched well with the show, book 3 was split into 2 seasons, with things happening in very different order. I would have not been happy if I had read book 3 before watching season 4.

What did you think of Neil's book? I have it here and started it and then got interrupted. Will have to start from the beginning when I pick it back up.

I think I'll look for The Elementals--that sounds interesting!
I am halfway through The Elementals (I can be a slow reader sometimes, even when the book is terrific) and I am really struck by how good the writing is. As a big fan of the horror explosion that took place during the 1970s and 1980s, I know the writing can vary from author to author. I have read a lot of John Saul books, but I will be the first to say they are not well written and very formulaic. Michael McDowell has quite a sense of humor and a gift for character development.

This is my favorite Gaiman book. I never thought anything would take over Neverwhere but this did so I highly recommend you read it.

Not that you asked my opinion......

I enjoyed it very much. It was my first Neil Gaiman book. I thought it started a bit rough but before the middle I was hooked on the story and couldn't put it down. But, yes, I'd start from the beginning.

That's what I was worried about, especially after it was announced Mr. Mercedes would be the first in a trilogy right after I read Cuckoo's Calling. Which, the news about MM is exciting, of course! But I didn't want to be getting things mixed up  I started Wool, so far I'm totally engrossed, can't wait to get back to it.

Oh my. So many questions!!!!!!!!
I was stunned and a lot perturbed! How could Mr. McCammon do that to us?

I read a recent interview that there are 5 more Matthew Corbett adventures coming. Now if I can just lived long enough to read them all will be part of my daily prayer.
