Thanks, Mr Nobody Interesting Picture. 22nd reg SAS or the Reg. I assume you read Bravo Two Zero, what you may not have read was another book by a member of the 'reg' called the real bravo two zero. the chappie spent 2 years living with nomads etc and tells interested folks like you and I everything in Bravo two zero is a lie. I don't know what to believe. If you are a member of the SAS you do not tell anyone you are. Offical secrets act. There are 4 troops inSAS mountain boat(not SBS) air, i cant think of the other one.
The one by "Michael Asher"? Yep, read it. What
actually happened will probably never be known - as in, what the mission was, etc - since BTZ, The Real BTZ, The One That Got Away, et al, were all (presumably) subject to MoD clearance. Then there are those who claimed "Andy McNab" was a bit of a fantasist anyway, so like you, I don't know what to believe. It's interesting stuff, though.
Strictly speaking, you're not supposed to tell anyone which unit you're with anyway under the conditions laid down by the OSA, but most squaddies do. UKSF is obviously a special case, but one advantage is that no one ever believes you if you say you're in whichever unit, be it 22 Reg, 21 Reg (Artists), 23 Reg (TA), SBS, "The Det/14 Int Group"...whatever. Deep **** awaits those who tell, but you've got the usual guys who end up on the telly, undisguised but presumably using false names, and I know one of my godfathers was 'in' (many moons ago) so the veil slips now and then. But for all I know, you know all this and more. Who's to say?
(The funny thing was, when my godfather told his wife which unit he was in, she didn't believe him. She thought he was one of the REME guys attached to service their vehicles. She only got confronted with the real truth when he died, almost 30 years after he got out.)
IIRC, the other troop's Mobility.
Have you read
Go! Go! Go! by Rusty Firmin and Will Pearson at all? It's an account of the Iranian Embassy siege.
