I'd rate him over Hemingway any day. He wrote about Montana, Michigan and all over, capturing the spirit of the West and revealing the wildness in his characters. He rode horses, motorcycles, smoked cigars, listened to Classical music, and was a marvelous writer.
Mn! He resembles Hemingway a lot!
He really does in the older picture.
The young J.D. Salinger, taken from his school yearbook at Valley Forge Military Academy. This is basically as close as we will get to a photograph of Holden Caulfield at Pencey Prep!
And here he is a few years later as a young man in military service. I love this photo. He doesn't look like a genius - he just looks like an ordinary, slightly awkward, friendly young fellow.
Will James, the Western writer and illustrator. On of my favorite books is by this man.
