Just curious. Why did Kyra call Max/Rogette white poppa and white nana? Were Mattie and/or Kyra African-American?

I didn't get that impression from their physical descriptions, but I thought I would ask. Was thinking if they are maybe there was supposed to be a connection between Sara and the awful way she died to Mattie and how she and her child were put upon by the TR?

I assume the nicknames could simply be because they were old. Thought I'd see what fellow avid SK readers thought!

Kyra's parents, Mattie and Lance, were both white. Her grandfather, Max Devore, was white. The woman Kyra called "Nana" was actually her aunt. I don't know why she called them "White Poppa" and "White Nana", I don't remember the context. Great question.

I assumed it was because of their hair color.
