The people in charge of marketing, etc. at company's like Urban Outfitters are so far removed from that particular era in history that this seems OK to them. It's sad.
Or just wanted to cash in on it. SMHApparently some have forgotten history. Or never learned it.
Their intention was to make money. And they did.The full apology from Urban Outfitters reads:
“Urban Outfitters sincerely apologizes for any offense our Vintage Kent State Sweatshirt may have caused. It was never our intention to allude to the tragic events that took place at Kent State in 1970 and we are extremely saddened that this item was perceived as such. The one-of-a-kind item was purchased as part of our sun-faded vintage collection. There is no blood on this shirt nor has this item been altered in any way. The red stains are discoloration from the original shade of the shirt and the holes are from natural wear and fray. Again, we deeply regret that this item was perceived negatively and we have removed it immediately from our website to avoid further upset.”
Isn’t the first time Urban Outfitters has done something like this and won’t be the last. Possibly a calculated marketing decision to suffer the little bits of backlash over lots of media attention and a zillion hits to their website... and with the disclaimer allowing them to proclaim no culpability. If I were a soulless marketing guru... I’d say “genius!”
Even better, a Charles Manson maternity shirt, splattered with a bloody "Helter Skelter" across the front. (Manson murder victim Sharon Tate was heavily pregnant when they killed her.)Perhaps all the buzz around Urban Outfitters recent “Holocaust Tee” was a rounding success?
Nope, no controversy intended whatsoever with the Kent Tee. Wink, wink.
Mayhaps a Charlie Manson Family Tee is next up?
Make 'em look like construction materials and call it a World Trade Center Tee.I got some old sweatshirts...maybe I could make a killing on them? I have a mission! Full of caulking, paint, dried up spray-foam insulation. Wonder what I could pass that stuff off as? Any suggestions?
To this day...I can not drink grape Kool-Aid without thinking about those poor people....maybe they'll come out next with a grape flavored drink mix that was endorsed by Jim Jones...
We drink it, but I think of them every single time.To this day...I can not drink grape Kool-Aid without thinking about those poor people.
But it wasn't Kool Aid's fault. It was some crazy maniac.I am surprised Kool Aid is still in business. Can you imagine after all that?

I'm going to borrow Reds quote regarding Kent State Sweatshirt and the Holocost T's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85V1Xewv20k

...hence my sarcasm of "grape flavored drink"....generic sarcasm that is...It was actually Flavor Aid they drank. There were grape flavored packets of Flavor Aid used. A storage container had Kool Aid in it and that's why people think it was Kool Aid.
"Given that reasoning, Jones and several members argued that the group should commit "revolutionary suicide" by drinking cyanide-laced grape-flavored Flavor Aid. Later released videos made to show the best of Jonestown show Jones opening a storage container full of Kool-Aid in large quantities. However, empty packets of grape Flavor Aid found on the scene show that this is what was used to mix the "potion" (as was referred to in several statements obtained by the FBI in the final tape recordings) along with a sedative.["
