I hang out on FB quite a lot for fun, giggles and such. But there is very simply no group of people anywhere else on the web to compare to this, the Ka-Tet. That means something real here.

I like you folks. Simple as that. I spend quite a bit of time with family but you guys are like an honest sounding board. I find gems of wisdom here in my favorite genre of horror. I'm happy to have this place to turn to even when I don't respond but only lurk. My old forum of TTLG I have a sentimental attachment to but most have drifted away that I held dear. Also this place is about horror which has been my foundation since childhood. I love the titillation of fear. Also I'm rather strange.

Came to the site for the "On Writing" assignment, which turned out to defunct, found this forum, registered anonymously because that's what you do on an Internet forum, found it full of very nice people, and I liked them and being here so much that the anonymity peeled away for me. Besides Facebook, it's the only social media I use.

It's also a good sounding board. The anonymity almost works in reverse. I say things here I wouldn't other places and get great feedback on it.

It may have started as a place to talk about a shared favorite author, but it has turned into so much more. As there are a lot of avid readers you will find someone with an opinion on what you have just read. One of my favorite things is that people generally behave in a respectful way.
You are a favorite member doowopgirl, you are always nice and respectful to people..wish I followed your example more! But you are definitely a great member here.. ;) here is my favorite doowop song for ya..

Yeah, this right here about sums it up.

I've been in many forums ever since the dial-up Internet days. Eventually, I would get disgusted by the trolls and know-it-alls, the keyboard warriors, and general all-round jerks. It's tiresome, it's pointless, and it's a general waste of time. I stopped contributing to King's Facebook page for the same reason and found my way here going on two years now, when I had just finished reading Doctor Sleep & Revival and was thrilled to discuss SK's return to horror.

I like it here. I've had my run-ins with the token trolls, but they have mercifully been at a minimum. I like the variety of topics discussed, I like the level of discourse, I like that we don't necessarily have to like the same things and not be defensive about it, I like the firm but gentle guiding hands of the Moderators, and I really like you guys. You guys are awesome. This is the first forum I've joined in about...I'd say roughly ten years. I think I'll stick around for a while, if you don't mind.

Old threads can always be revived when someone adds their thoughts and feelings to the mix. It sparks new conversations, and gives people who have commented their previously new insights of their own.

Oh, believe me, I am all for that.

I hate it when some members in other forums start crying about "necromancy" when people add to an old post. I definitely prefer doing that than creating a lot of new threads for discussions that already existed.

When I said "I fell I am really missing out since all the conversations started and ended before I came here", I did not completely mean that they "ended" because the topic was completely explored, but that they ended when the old threads ceased to exist (as implied by "are now lost along with the old content"). So now there are no old threads to reply to, since they were lost before I joined. :blue:

I don't know! But I do find this forum to be a pleasant surprise. I'm an old campaigner who remembers when Alta Vista was the predominate search utility, and insidetheweb was the forum of choice for nearly everyone. You could throw up a working message board in like 3 minutes! The inmates were running the asylum. I have a core group of online friends I've known since what -- the 90's? Oddly several worked in advertising and nearly all were southern, or southern expatriates, who aspired to write. We dropped out for a decade or so :) , but over the last several years discussing our personal reading habits, I've mentioned SK a lot & got very little traction. They feigned a bit of interest -- because y'know, they, as many of you folks have noticed, ain't no sunshine when I'm gone. They like to keep 'grin' engaged. Losing me would be unthinkable. But their hearts weren't in it. Still, several have read some of the Gunslinger books which I have avoided. For now. Anyway, I came across this forum, and half-heartedly created a profile. Assuming I'd only need it for days. In my brief young life I've waded into many fan forums. Most members are -- how do I put this? Out of their damn minds. I decided to storm the SK citadel in the manner of Sonny Chiba, using monkey-style kung fu.

I immediately attacked Cell, book & movie, one of King's Achilles heels. Then I think I posted something like, "Desperation didn't make any damn sense." LOL! Which isn't really true. It's a pretty good book. Ha. Then the forum sicced a giant on me! Even being an old campaigner, that was unexpected. Where the hell did they get him at?! But shortly I began to notice the people on this board aren't really that alike. It's not what Kurt Vonnegut called a grandfalloon. (A granfalloon, in the fictional religion of Bokononism (created by Kurt Vonnegut in his 1963 novel Cat's Cradle), is defined as a "false karass". That is, it is a group of people who affect a shared identity or purpose, but whose mutual association is meaningless.) The forum is just a place to throw out ideas & screw around. It's not their whole life. Generally, the people here don't affect a shared identity. Like if I wrote, "Tabatha King's work is crap!" I'd get a lot of "Die! Go away! You're a monster! I hate you!" And some, "Whatever, shut up." But why do I come back? Mostly for the continental breakfast.
