About that same time, sports teams started giving trophies to everyone who participated, not just the ones who'd done something above and beyond. So now that everyone's special, no one is.
So ridiculous.

I don't like the "participation" trophy. I think you can accomplish the same thing by awarding no trophies at all. In fact, I think that sends a better message. I'm not sure how I feel about singling people out for recognition as it pertains to kids who don't get singled out. Have kids become that sensitive . . . or are we merely afraid they will.

Story time:

When I was 10 or 11 years old, I was a pretty fair baseball player, and I was all set to be the shortstop on my little league team, but there was this other kid -- Collins -- who was almost as good as me and the coach figured I could help the team just as well in center field. I was cool with it either way, except then there was this other kid -- Jimmy -- who was really good in the outfield but couldn't play the infield . . . so the coach asks me if I ever played catcher (which nobody wanted to play because it's a hard position to play and it's really hot and you have to wear all that gear).

Well, I had never played catcher before, but I gave it a try and -- whaddaya know? -- I was pretty good at that, too.

Long story not much shorter, at the end of the year the coach gave the Most Valuable Player trophy to our best pitcher, who spent the season trying to break my hand with his fastball, and he gave what was then called the Coaches Award to me, because I had exhibited the best team spirit by agreeing to do whatever was best for the team.

Okay . . . I'm all done patting myself on the back now, but can somebody please explain to me how rewarding a kid for being selfless and teaching the whole team that nobody is above the team . . .

How on earth is that a bad thing?

Remember when they banned camo clothes in schools? I forget why, I was in home school by then, but they did.

Sometimes I think homeschool is better. You can study in your pajamas if you want to, because it's the grades that matter, not the threads. You're free to figure out who you are, and there's none of this pressure to be "popular".

Then when you enter the world as this self-motivated, hard working, moral individual, everyone loses their minds...

So, really, there's no way to win.

Oh, man, if they banned camouflage clothing in my school, most of the kids would be wearing their pajamas!
(By the way, I own nothing camo. Just the inflammatory superhero t-shirts.)

Nothing like that happens over here. In fact, over here, that teacher would probably be officially designated by the government as a dumbsh1t (that's an official ASIO term BTW) and be forced to go toe-to-toe with a pissed off wombat.

Off topic, but did I mention you have a hellaciously cool avatar sir? If I didn't well you do, if I did, well, you still do:)

I've always heard the rap on home schooling was that kids do not get properly "socialized." What I remember of my formative years in school was a lot of little groups partitioning themselves off according to strict -- but unspoken -- rules of dress or comportment or neighborhood or . . . whatever it might be.

I look around now and I see almost nobody paying attention to what is going on around them, preferring to spend their time inside (or at least attached to) the little glowing screen.

It seems to me that we've given up on actual socialization in favor of an a la carte approach to life, where we can pick our own version of whatever we want and find a group of people who agree with us, thus making us "right."

I guess it's just the world moving on the way it does, but every time this observation slaps me in the face I keep thinking of that talking head In the little box from when I was a kid:

"Z-12 where are you? I need you, Z-12! I have things to do."

And plus besides . . . the world probably wasn't really the way I remember it being when I was a kid.

I'm probably missing something that never existed.

I was homeschooled from the fourth grade on, and while my parents messed up a lot when it came to my schooling, I'm still an advocate for it. I just think the parent needs to accept responsibility for their child's mental health, and make a point to get their kids out there. 4-H, soccer, church groups, something to make sure their child makes friends. Homeschool should not be used as a way to brainwash a kid.

It does change a kid, though. In public school, I was a bit of a troublemaker. I only wanted to be popular, but the things I did to gain attention were fairly messed up. At home, away from all that mess, I was free to be myself. It makes for an interesting life now, as an adult, but I'm still glad I "dropped out" of public school.

The world isn't what I thought it would be. It's a difficult, confusing mess of greed and control issues, and people don't seem to care about each other. I feel so out of place in this world that I'm more isolated and antisocial now than I was when I was a kid; and I live in a city. (sort of)

I swear, if it weren't for the tiny handful of good people in my life, I would have run away a long time ago!

Way back a long time ago, this guy Jackson Browne used to sing this great line:

"I've been up and down this highway, far as my eye can see. But no matter how fast I run, I can never seem to get away from me."

I've also heard this summed up as "Wherever you go, there you are."

You're right about the world. That's the bad news. The good news is you also appear to have found the antidote, that tiny handful of good people.

Always remember: Happiness is qualitative, not quantitative.
