Topic has probably been exhausted, but, just found out about this (I know, like, I live under a rock) - any ideas on how I can read this without shelling out $200 or $300?

I have found many copies of this edition (trade paperback) at thriftstores and used bookstores. Usually for around $6. The hardback copies usually run a little bit more. If you live in the US check thriftbooks.com. They have cheap prices for their books and shipping is included. Don't bother trying for the hardback because they want way too much for those!...my dear, I have found numerous copies of this....(below)...at used book stores and flea markets...nowhere near 3 Benjamin's...less than 40 bucks actually...
If you don't have a Goodwill or used bookstore near you, you can order The Bachman Books from amazon. Prices start out around $2.00.
I havn't read rage either. I wondered who it was living under my rock with me
...Holy Crap!...better check mine one of these days...wouldn't ever sell it, but it would be neat...dog-eared and all...Just came back from a used bookstore where they had a copy of the newer trade paperback (published 1996, I think) with Rage in it and were asking $5.50 for it. There are copies out there, you just have to take the time to look for them. And, like Prufrock said above- if you want an original 1st printing paperback you're going to have to pay a couple of hundred for it.
This is the copy I have. Recently got it at a thrift store for $1.50. If you check places like that you can find all sorts of books cheap....my dear, I have found numerous copies of this....(below)...at used book stores and flea markets...nowhere near 3 Benjamin's...less than 40 bucks actually...
...Yeah, I've found them very inexpensive as well...the 40 buck price was just a random snatch/guess before I really put the brain into grudging gear...This is the copy I have. Recently got it at a thrift store for $1.50. If you check places like that you can find all sorts of books cheap.
Took me 20 years of perusing thrift stores and used bookstores before I FINALLY found a 1st printing hardback at a Goodwill! One of the reasons the first printing hardcover of The Bachman Books is so expensive is that there were only 15,000 copies done (which is a very small number for the trade edition), and they were done at the same time as a much larger printing of the trade (large size) paperback. Most people opted to get the much more common trade paperback. I got one of each.
