About 12 years ago, the Ogre and our oldest were fishing - so gone for most of the day. I had plopped down on the couch with my legs criss-cross applesauce, and it felt weird. So then I get up and get to changing sheets - as soon as I reached across the bed, something in my back went out. I was paralyzed with pain, with an 18 month old wandering around the house. I had to lay on the floor until the Ogre got home. He didn't know what to do with me, so he called his dad who got me a 6am apt with his chiropractor. For about 12 more hours I wanted to die, and the Ogre had to tend to all my needs. Now the funny part of this story: it was that time of the month and I had to have an x-ray. When he showed us the x-ray, you could clearly see that I had popped my SI joint out of place - this is more of a pelvic issue, but it causes horrid back pain. My hips were totally uneven - and you could also see clearly my tampon, right there on the screen. I was soooo :O_O:. But the good news - he was able to pop it right back in. Of course he wanted me to come back 24 times to be sure I was OK, but after that 1 time, it never happened again. I'm all good now.

Oh Gawwwwd, woman! You made me cringe and laugh my ass off--I am sorry you were in such pain, but boy... am I going to be extra careful at a certain time of the month now, yar?

It was pretty funny, sitting there with the Ogre, looking at the X-ray while the doctor says "women tend to have joint problems particularly during their cycle", and I'm like - "geeze, how'd you guess" while the bright white tampon glares on the screen. Do be careful, darling, during your cycle. Don't act like a teenager.

Grandma's kind of a wimp in terms of pain. When she hurts, I know it. I love her more than I could say, but she limps when she's got a headache. She can work through pain and fatigue, don't get me wrong. Her work ethic is ferocious. But when she's hurting, she doesn't internalize. We'll leave it at that.

But it comes to childbirth, and she's someone else. Three kids, no drugs, was ready for more, and if good sense and finances hadn't held sway over the maternal instinct, we'd have had a raft of them, and not a small raft, either. I was there for all of them, and I marveled at her. The third one came so quickly that they didn't even give her a local for the epis, and the baby was past the point where any "natural numbing" could take place. Ouch!

Oh, the back. That's what we're talking about. I was getting along in my 50s, lower back starting to hurt more, getting out of bed, getting out of the car, and I'm grumbling, "Dessication, degeneration of disk material," and refusing to go to the Spinechopper Clinic.

A friend bought me a gift certificate for a massage session. I've got a thing about touch, the thing being that I'm somewhat averse to it. Not a hugger. But I finally went in for my first massage ever. Said I wasn't really having problems, except the back twinges, which I knew massage couldn't help.

I was dead wrong. I got up 30 minutes later and my lower back felt fine. I asked how that could be and was told that there's ligaments, tendons, and muscles stretching, pulling, and compressing in the low back that can cause low back pain. So now I'm a believer, and I put aside my aversion on a semi-periodic basis to allow someone else to touch me for pretty much a solid 60 minutes. I got used to it after five or six years.

Really? We have a new therapeutic massage clinic just up the street - maybe I should book an appointment :umm:

p.s. I was just like your wife in the childbirth department - no drugs and very easy childbirths (knock on wood).
