Once again someone lost control and took out my mailbox last night, and dug up the wet lawn with their tires. It has been well over 10 times since I moved in and not once has anyone ever stopped to say what they did. Well, I know what I’ll be doing over the weekend. Do they make exploding mailboxes?
I remember someone in Tightwad Gazette saying that they got so tired of kids taking out their mailbox that they bought two mailboxes, one regular sized and the other oversized. They put the regular sized box inside the big box and cemented between the two. Then I think they cemented the whole thing to one of the big redwood posts and sunk it in the ground with more cement. Looked pretty normal, but the next kid who thought he'd be smart and play mailbox baseball ended up with a broken wrist. Problem solved :) If you're not willing to go that far (lol), have you checked with your local P.O. to see if you can get a dispensation to have your box on your house? I know that here, once it's moved to the road you can't go back to house delivery without petitioning.

Haven't tried, but I kind of think trying to get a special mail delivery dispensation because of having my mail boxes taken out in these parts would be near impossible. And if they gave it to me, everyone around here would want one.

If you're the only one having their mailbox crashed into (or the main one, anyway), that makes the request reasonable and appropriate. If everyone's boxes are being taken out... well, that's a larger problem & maybe the boxes never should have been moved. I know it's more efficient for the carriers to not have to leave their truck (and those that are in a truck are sometimes not covered by their insurance if they get out--this from a friend who is a carrier in CA), but whatever. They work for us. We are going to appeal because we live next door to and across the street from schools, and someone is nearly always parked in front of our mailbox (we have the biggest shade trees around--lol). Our carrier won't deliver in that case; he just drives by. It's BS. We've done what we can with the schools, and it's done no good, so our next option is to argue our case to the P.O.

Yeah, everybody's mailboxes on the road are taken out. Old time residents tell me it's been that way since they built the ski resort in the mid 70's.

And good luck in your efforts. Sounds like you have a reasonable case. Maybe some footage of the carrier driving by and not delivering the mail because of the parked cars will help your cause.

How about a "No Parking Zone" or better yet "Delivery Zone, no parking" sign some distance on each side of the mail box?
