Hey, Linda, what say? Haven't been keeping up with the board much. How's life treating you? Good, I hope. And yeah, I miss the pickles. The last two growing seasons weren't the best...we had veggies, but not enough to pickle and can. This year I'm going all out.

Lifes been good. Doing well. Its awesome you like to can. Not many do that anymore.

That is an excellent idea: pancake sandwich!

I had a surprise yesterday. Last week we bought a sugar baby at the Farmer's Market. Never got around to cutting it open. This week we got our tomatoes and watermelon. Got home and cut the watermelon only to discover it was sponge like. Gross. Must have been sitting there too long. Or just a bad watermelon - I tossed it over the fence for the turtles and birds. So I cut the sugar baby open. SURPRISE! It was a perfect watermelon, disguised as a sugar baby. Oh happy day! Watermelon season is almost over. I can't bear a day without watermelon during the summer. Surprise is on us though: sugar baby is actually a watermelon. I didn't know that. Was expecting something different. Chocolate and caramel inside, maybe? Had no idea.

Tried to watch CBS Sunday Morning just now nottie. Seems to be more politics. I can't watch that nonsense. I am so tired of politics. Not on my Sunday!

I missed the beginning, Hols. I guess it turned around after that. Still the best show evers.
Great idea to toss the melon to birds and critters. I used to see Amish farmers tossing pumpkins to the horses. They chased them around and ate them.

Was like watching a bazaar soccer game. Would have never thought it.

Results of Canning Weekend, 20-21 AUG 16:
9 bottles bread & butter, 17 bottles dilly bean, 13 bottles green tomato, 14 bottles garlic dill.
here's a pic or two:
canning weekend 001.JPG canning weekend 004.JPG canning continued 001.JPG might have done that last one at 6:20 this morning, but it's still not posted yet. that's that's the green tomato pickles I brewed yesterday, bottled this morning. We have pickles! And the garden isn't through, yet. Might make some salsa at some point...probably need to make salsa to make use of the red tomatoes as they ripen. Nothing beats a garden tomato...Roma, Early Girl, Better Boy, orange and red Cherry, a couple other varieties I forget their name. Happy Sunday! :)

9,302 posts only...must be a slow summer. been raining all day so what better day than today to can stuff. don't know why they call it "canning" as bottles are involved, two-piece lids. anyone participate? here's some pics: View attachment 17064 View attachment 17069 View attachment 17068 View attachment 17067 View attachment 17066 View attachment 17064
nine jars of bread & butter pickles, 17 jars of dilly bean pickles, a pot full of green tomato pickles (hey, do any of you have a recipe or explanation for how to make fried green tomatoes? thanks!) that i'll put up tomorrow morning after they set the night. garden has been doing great! 'bout 6-7 gallons of green and yellow beans, cukes, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, onions (also in the b&b pickles), yellow squash...still waiting on that to get pick enough to eat. what else? picked about three or four gallons of wild raspberries...the wife picked a pile of wild strawberries...bought (from three cute little blonde-haired girls) maybe 6-7 quarts of farm-grown strawberries. only have about 4 jars of jam left, pile of empty bottles, so that's next. feel like i accomplished something today. but it'd been raining, the whole day long. sorry to hear about the troubles many have been having. i wish there was something i could do. best wishes. lots of hugs and kisses...the wet kind, the kind you might need a paper towel for. that's what i'm here for. ummm...what else?

work is crazy busy. just finished a 33-square siding job. you could fit three or four of our house in this one. guy is from canada and his two-year-old is a hoot. simon. couldn't understand a word he said but he said it all with feeling and i agree whole-heartedly. showed me his...small block toys? the kind with the pegs? legos, i think they're called. 'that thing there looks like it's ready to blast off for mars!' he nodded. looked like a combination row-boat/jeep/tank. kids are great, hey? nothing can stop their imagination.

been reading a lot of c.j. box. he is the greatest! has a collection of stories set in wyoming? game warden the hero. has this western, cop/robber, mystery vibe going for it. really good stories. i recommend for what that's worth.

that's ma's green tomato recipe there, that one. haven't had pickles for a few years now so i'm stoked.
best regards!
walt

Loved hearing about all your canning. My Mom did all kinds of canning and after she passed away I found a small
book in which she had written all her recipes in. Still miss her mustard bean pickle and tomato salad. Used to eat
that stuff by the spoonful.

This Albanian from the Dilbert strip? Or is that another country? They stand around in water, right? Long black beards? Moose hats? They advertise, or what? As long as you're satisfied with the work, all is well

You nut case, you!

My friend is actually from Albania (well technically from Kosovo). He is over there now visiting his 'mama' (I think they call her 'nona').

Anyway I am not sure what it is about Albanians but it seems everyone has a misconstrued version of what they are like.

He did a reno on our main floor bathroom and did such excellent work that I got him to come back and do the stairs going up to the second floor and down to the basement. They are 100% nicer now in hardwood. They used to be covered in carpeting and it was in such a bad state - yuck [disgusting].

Just for a laugh, here is Dee's son, Alban (yes I know he named him after Albania) He was such a shy young fellow:

What the heck? Sugar baby?

I think I should move down south - never heard of such a thing in Canada!

As long as you're satisfied with the work, all is well. It's been...ummm, twenty years or more? But I was doing decks for $5/square foot at one time, material and labor. Didn't make any money, but I had a blast. A gazebo or two. This one, guy wanted a round section on one corner, opposite the other corner where I built the deck around a tree. Some multiple-level decks. Have pics...Polaroids even, that's how long ago this was. There are so many options on material anymore that the price range of any deck could vary widely simply based on materials used. If you're happy with it, that's all that matters. Albanians gotta eat, too.

:highly_amused::love::laugh::rofl:

Dee is not quite as hunky as his son, but he is also a nice polite guy.

Here he is doing the Duck Face look :lol_pig:

Yup - that is me - he was showing me how to do a 'selfie'

Yeah...I have Mom's old recipes. How'd that happen, two sisters and I end up with the recipe book? Heh! Also have this recipe booklet we made in the 2nd or third grade, all my classmates. Don't recall what recipe I brought in.

Okay, I get it...yeah, I think they took you to the cleaners! Best call that hunka hunka burnin love back to the home-front, tell him you are not satisfied and that you need to be satisfied. Is that the deck, then?

I'm cooking up some salsa now. I figured, why not? I might not get another chance. Sun is shining, cut the grass, and started the salsa:

I'll do the hot water bath thing later on tonight and that'll be it. No more pint bottles, might not even have enough. Now I have all those empty jam jars to fill but that can wait until a Rainy Tuesday in the fall. Happy Sunday! :)

umm - did I even mention how much I got charged? No - the young man did not satisfy me :a11:

He was so shy it was hard to get him to talk even.

Please get your mind out of the gutter Walter Oobleck - Pennywise is down there, you know!

The Oobleck's Canning Weekend is/was a resounding success! I've added 12 bottles of salsa to the total...so something like 67 bottles of pickles and salsa. Beer-thirty. Here's a pic of the result:
salsa and done! 001.JPG
now there's about 72 empty jars for jam sitting in the same closet where these bottles were kept, but that's another day. Some Rainy Tuesday like I said. Somebody bringing the chips? Hope you all like pickles. Happy Sunday! :)
