Oh yum y'all - pepper steak! scampi! I know them both very well.

Grease sing along was amazing fun last night. I was running so late because of work that I didn't get to dress up. But lots of people did. Couples even. How to convince Ogre to dress up like Danny or Kenickie next year. I forgot about ChaCha. I would dress like ChaCha. I didn't think I would sing but I totally did. Everyone except the kids sang. Great fun. Glad I went. Had four 13 year old girls in the house last night. Didn't hear a peep out of them. Did they sneak out or did I sleep that hard or were they really that good? Got to make birthday pancakes.
The kids probably don't know the words I guess

Believe it or not I was not really into that "Grease" movie or even "Dirty Dancing" (gasp!)

I must be weird that way

I did like the movie "Coneheads" - perhaps my taste is a bit quirky that way.

nine jars of bread & butter pickles, 17 jars of dilly bean pickles, a pot full of green tomato pickles (hey, do any of you have a recipe or explanation for how to make fried green tomatoes? thanks!) that i'll put up tomorrow morning after they set the night. garden has been doing great! 'bout 6-7 gallons of green and yellow beans, cukes, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, onions (also in the b&b pickles), yellow squash...still waiting on that to get pick enough to eat. what else? picked about three or four gallons of wild raspberries...the wife picked a pile of wild strawberries...bought (from three cute little blonde-haired girls) maybe 6-7 quarts of farm-grown strawberries. only have about 4 jars of jam left, pile of empty bottles, so that's next. feel like i accomplished something today. but it'd been raining, the whole day long. sorry to hear about the troubles many have been having. i wish there was something i could do. best wishes. lots of hugs and kisses...the wet kind, the kind you might need a paper towel for. that's what i'm here for. ummm...what else?

work is crazy busy. just finished a 33-square siding job. you could fit three or four of our house in this one. guy is from canada and his two-year-old is a hoot. simon. couldn't understand a word he said but he said it all with feeling and i agree whole-heartedly. showed me his...small block toys? the kind with the pegs? legos, i think they're called. 'that thing there looks like it's ready to blast off for mars!' he nodded. looked like a combination row-boat/jeep/tank. kids are great, hey? nothing can stop their imagination.

been reading a lot of c.j. box. he is the greatest! has a collection of stories set in wyoming? game warden the hero. has this western, cop/robber, mystery vibe going for it. really good stories. i recommend for what that's worth.

that's ma's green tomato recipe there, that one. haven't had pickles for a few years now so i'm stoked.

I should ask you privately if I got ripped off or not - my Albanian contractor and his son built me a fantastic deck that is firmly attached to the house - it blows the old one out of the water. It was a bit on the pricey side, however.

Hello my friend, Walter!
Sounds like you have been a busy beaver! All the things you are canning sounds delicious!
My mother used to do that too, when the garden came in. I loved the jams she would make! We had a wild blackberry field across the road, and we would go pick them. We also had an apple tree that she would make apple dumplings with. Man, my mouth is watering thinking about those apple dumplings! Can't find them anywhere any more.

still raining, too. I'm anxious to try the dilly bean, never made 'em before. I think they might be like that three-bean salad? Hope they're good. Will make some dill pickles tomorrow, too.

I should ask you privately if I got ripped off or not - my Albanian contractor and his son built me a fantastic deck that is firmly attached to the house - it blows the old one out of the water. It was a bit on the pricey side, however.

This Albanian from the Dilbert strip? Or is that another country? They stand around in water, right? Long black beards? Moose hats? They advertise, or what? As long as you're satisfied with the work, all is well. It's been...ummm, twenty years or more? But I was doing decks for $5/square foot at one time, material and labor. Didn't make any money, but I had a blast. A gazebo or two. This one, guy wanted a round section on one corner, opposite the other corner where I built the deck around a tree. Some multiple-level decks. Have pics...Polaroids even, that's how long ago this was. There are so many options on material anymore that the price range of any deck could vary widely simply based on materials used. If you're happy with it, that's all that matters. Albanians gotta eat, too.

Beavers...yeah, now I'm thinking fishing. After an all-day rain like this, the fishing would be outstanding tomorrow, or right now even. There was this once, I'm out on the Wildcat, half an hour walk in past the locked gate...in chest waders, short spinning rod, a container of worms. Man that was a blast. I come around a bend in the river, heavy growth, come into a meadow area, long chest high grass, sun coming up through the trees over yonder and every tree and bush was sparkling with spider webs, every web glistening with drops of diamond-like dew. Wish I had a camera. Same stream, beavers had it backed up for a quarter mile, standing chest deep, every cast a trout.

couple more pics...picked a little over a quart of blackberries today, too. Nice, 'cause they were wet, clean...and the wife picked some blueberries out toward Rice Lake. She'd already picked a bunch last two weekends. Thought about trying to make wine from the blackberries, looked into it, but naw. That's the garden for what it's worth. Fun times, old dog kennel. We babysat a couple dogs this summer, Whiskey, a husky...took him berry picking. He didn't likes the flies so we came home...and Kobie, a little white dog, couple different breeds mixed. We make apple sauce and other stuff from the tree there. Apple sauce is relatively easy to make, peel & core the apples, cook them down in the crock, freeze, nothing added, just apple.

Hey, Linda, what say? Haven't been keeping up with the board much. How's life treating you? Good, I hope. And yeah, I miss the pickles. The last two growing seasons weren't the best...we had veggies, but not enough to pickle and can. This year I'm going all out.

Yeah, my parents used to store the produce in the basement, too. Had some old cupboards down there. Same here, but I'm going to put them in the closet where I keep the bottles when I empty them out. I hope thinks are well in Florida.

Hi Walter Oobleck ! You've been busy and will be eating well all winter! My mom and her sisters used to can often during the summer. I remember spending hours with them stringing and snapping green beans. It was boring fun. I loved listening to them tell their stories.

We've done some projects this summer. Still haven't painted the exterior though. The quote from a contractor wasn't bad, but we needed the money for something else. Maybe in the fall.

Good to see you back here!

Cooked the green tomato pickles. There's a word or a phrase for that...can't think of it. What you do is sterilize the jars and lids, first, in boiling water for a time, take them out, load 'em up with the tomato pickles that have set through the night, screw on the lids and put them back in the boiling water for 15 minutes...take them out, and after a time they begin to "pop"...the lids...I think what happens is they seal and the pop indicates that has happened. Still raining, too. A jar just popped. Few more pics...19 jars of dilly bean, 9 jars of bread & butter, 13 jars of green tomato pickles. Green tomato pickles go great with spaghetti, almost like you can't have one without the other. Cue Al, sitting on the couch, beer can in hand. Pics: canning continued 001.JPG canning continued 005.JPG

Thank you for the welcome backs. Wasn't going to swing by 'til I'd read Finders Keepers/End of Watch. Maybe soon. Have the first on the kindle, haven't purchased the second and last as yet.

Happy Sunday to you. :)

That is an excellent idea: pancake sandwich!

I had a surprise yesterday. Last week we bought a sugar baby at the Farmer's Market. Never got around to cutting it open. This week we got our tomatoes and watermelon. Got home and cut the watermelon only to discover it was sponge like. Gross. Must have been sitting there too long. Or just a bad watermelon - I tossed it over the fence for the turtles and birds. So I cut the sugar baby open. SURPRISE! It was a perfect watermelon, disguised as a sugar baby. Oh happy day! Watermelon season is almost over. I can't bear a day without watermelon during the summer. Surprise is on us though: sugar baby is actually a watermelon. I didn't know that. Was expecting something different. Chocolate and caramel inside, maybe? Had no idea.

Tried to watch CBS Sunday Morning just now nottie. Seems to be more politics. I can't watch that nonsense. I am so tired of politics. Not on my Sunday!
