20. XX (2017) on netflix

An outstanding Anthology movie (and judging from the savage reviews on IMDB, I’m in the minority with my opinion) all written and directed by women. The dark comedy, The Birthday Party was my favorite segment. I don’t understand the hate. I liked all 4 segments (The first segment was an adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s The Box). 8/10

15. The Others
A mother of two children who are allergic to light are stuck in a house that seems to be haunted. This movie just seems to keep getting better with age, with Nicole Kidman's standout performance as a highlight. What I really love about The Others is that there are no apparent special effects, gore or CGI, yet it is very eerie and effectively scary, as well as setting a perfect atmosphere for a ghost story. The children in the movie give very strong performances as well, with only the supporting actors seeming a little out of place at time. I had the pleasure of watching this one with my 12-year-old daughter who loves ghost stories yet she had never seen this movie before and knew nothing about it. She was completely blown away by it!

4.5 out of 5 stars.

I've watched this several times. Think this is one of Dana Jean 's favorites. :)

Neesy's List

1. Son of Dracula
2. Alias Grace (well, what happened to her was horrible)
3. Arachnophobia
4. House of the Witch - teenagers trapped in abandoned house on Hallowe'en are terrorized by a witch
5. Carrie (at the motel last night) - the one from a couple of years ago
6. My Soul to Take (on SyFy right now).
7. It (second viewing at the theatre tonight).
8. Nightmare on Elm Street 3 at the hotel in Deer River MN.
9. Messages Deleted (2010) was on TV today - more of a mystery than a horror but there were some gory parts.
10. Pay the Ghost (2015) with Nicolas Cage - a professor frantically searches for his son who was abducted during a Hallowe'en parade.
11. Child's Play - sort of watched it but mainly it was on because son and GF were watching it - seemed kind of silly to me.
12. Silver Bullet - on AMC
13. Christine (yup - that one with the classic car)
14. Thinner (Die well, white man from town).
15. Blood Honey - Tortured by the memory of a childhood trauma, a woman returns after a decade to her family's fly-in hunting lodge to assist her siblings with their dying father, only to find herself stuck in a life threatening nightmare.

It was okay at showing humanity at it's worst. One night a year it's okay to murder folks. Hey, got to let off steam. Most "decent" folks are okay if you have enough money to secure your house and don't let anyone in who is a bum or might dislike you for some reason.
16. Asylum.
This was a Hammer production. It centers around the arrival of a young psychiatric doctor to a mental institution but as he visits the patients he learns of what drove them mad in vignettes much as in "Garden of Terror" or "Tales From the Crypt (the movie)" and the whole wraps up by finishing the original story. It's an oft copied formula. It's not bad but I had higher hopes for this one.

30.) Rings (2017)

I guess this is the third movie in this series. Think I only saw the first one. The storyline was very good, but the movie could've been so much better. I adore Vincent D'Onofrio! IMDb gave this a 4.5/10 rating. I think I would be a tad kinder.

8 - once upon a time when i was but a youngster, during a week i stayed with my dad, they were running a creature feature week on USA? or some network. a week of movies about killer bugs. things i should *not* have been watching at that age (7? maybe, i forget exactly). watched them all week, and boy did i toss and turn that week. so i decided maybe i'll revisit some of these, 20 odd years later. first up was The Nest - carnivorous cockroaches invade an island village. the product of an experiment gone wrong, the only person who fully understands them is the doctor who created them, who spends most of the movie acting like she'd like to have sex with them more than she'd like to solve the problem. creepy. it's a definite B movie, so take it for what you will. bugs are creepy, so up until they go full ham on the effects it has an ick factor, it gets a little bit unbelievable and silly near the end. there's also entirely too much personal conflict between characters in a movie that's just supposed to be about bugs that eat people, most of which comes to naught because of course, people are getting eaten, so their conflicts sort of drop down the scale of importance.

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
3. It (2017)
4. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors
5. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
7. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare
8. The Nest

Updates (Finally)

1) John Carpenter's The Thing
2) Stakeland
3) The Bride of Frankenstein
4) The Crazies
5) Halloween H20
6) My Bloody Valentine
7) Session 9
9) Prince of Darkness - John Carpenter's effort featuring a cast jumble from Big Trouble in Little China and Halloween. I hadn't seen this one in a long time, and I found myself enjoying it a little bit more than my first viewing. There are some decent creepy moments and a lot of silly ones. I still love Alice Cooper and the bicycle... 6/10. A rental at best.
10) Mindhunter (episodes 1-3) - I'm counting this one as horror just for the subject matter. I had read John Douglas' book several years ago, which serves as the basis for this Netflix show. It's pretty damned disturbing and I'm looking forward to finishing this week. 8/10 so far.

This was one of the first movies I watched this month. Maria Bello was the best part. There were a few unexpected turns at the end. Wasn't great, wasn't horrible. Worth a look if you aren't searching for a WOW movie. :)
Thanks Morgan. We're going to try this one tonight if we can get the 2 year old human hurricane to sleep at a decent hour...lol

17) Friday the 13th (2009) - Couldn't find the original anywhere, so had to put up with the remake/reboot. Yeesh. Not as good as the original, and some of the characters (if you can call them that, they were so poorly fleshed out) pretty much had me rooting for the killer. 2/5
18) Maximum Overdrive - part of The Horror Channel's Stephen King season (4 movies! Cat's Eye, this, Thinner and Children of the Corn. We're being spoiled, I say! Spoiled! :biggrin2:). I had seen it before, though not for a while and...yeah. Still, the direction wasn't really that bad. Not when compared to...
19) Navy SEALS: The Battle for New Orleans (aka Navy SEALS vs Zombies, apparently) - Hm. First problem here is, the action takes place in Baton Rouge, so not really a battle for New Orleans. Even I know that. Second problem? These guys, to a man, are probably the most unconvincing bunch ever to have played soldiers on screen, let alone SEALS. Third problem (maybe should be second, but there you go), you can see ordinary life going on in the background in multiple scenes. I'm giving it 0.6/5 only because it was still better than The Black Room, but only just.

(I'm really struggling to find things to watch this year. Netflix and Amazon seem to have stocked up on wall-to-wall crap, with no one else apparently carrying the good stuff.)

Have a look at the top 25 of this list. There are some good ones. You may have to use to use search feature to find them.

10) AHS:Cult Ep 6 & 7 (2017) FTV – I am really digging this season, because the monsters are real! Messed up in so many ways!! 5/5

11) House of the Witch (2017) FTV – Another made for TV movie, but this one was better. It had some good FX and I was actually pleasantly surprised. 3/5

12) The Sixth Sense (1999) – I loved this movie. Saw it in the theater and it always brings back fond memories. M. Night at his best! 4.5/5

13) John Carpenter’s Vampires (1998) FTV – Full discloser. This was on in the background as I was cleaning house, so I may have missed some nuances that would have made it better, but on the other side, I’m glad I didn’t sit down to watch it. James Woods is a leader of a gang of vampire hunters. Gore and some humorous content that maybe wasn’t supposed to be. 2/5

14) The Conjuring (2013) FTV – I didn’t realize this was the Annabelle doll folks until I had started it. I probably wouldn’t have picked it if I had known, because that freaking doll creeps me out. Anyway, she’s only in this movie enough to make me squirm, so I made it through. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Scary stuff follows! 4/5

My List 2017:
1) Stir of Echoes (1999) - 3.5/5
2) Lights Out (2016)FTV - 3/5
3) Nosferatu (1922)FTV – 4/5
4) The Darkness (2016) FTV – 1.5/5\
5) Stir of Echoes 2: The Homecoming (2007) FTV – 1.5/5
6) Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985) – 3/5
7) Nightmare on Elm Street 3:Dream Warriors (1987) – 3.5/5
8) Ten:Murder Island (2017) FTV – 1/5
9) Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) – 2/5
10) AHS: Cult Ep 6 & 7 (2017) FTV – 5/5
11) House of the Witch (2017) FT – 3/5
12) The Sixth Sense (1999) – 4.5/5
