What's this recent obsession with creepy kids in horror flicks? Always some shadowy kid, slightly out of focus, bent into weird contortions and shaking with a bunch of jittery jump-cut shots. Like, every contemporary horror flick pulls this trick. Doesn't scare me, just annoys.

And every horror trailer looks like the rest. I'm asleep already.
When those weird contortions and jittery jump-cut shots first started, they were scary and creepy. Now it's over done.

20.) Survival of the Dead -- Romero (2008) his latest zombiemovie. Not the best. But interesting to see it.
21.) Signs - Night Shyamilan (2002) With Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix. A rather good alien invasion thing that starts with mysterious signs in the fields, circles and the like but thats just the start.

I liked Signs to a degree -- I enjoyed the deliberate, unrushed pacing -- and I liked the concept. But -- when they showed the alien at the birthday party, or wherever it was, and it was supposed to be such a frightening reveal, well, let's just say, I thought it wasn't that great (in my mind, I can see a spookier way of doing that). The way the aliens were stopped likewise made no sense (from the point of view that the aliens would have accounted for the threat); I assume that Wells was being channeled there, and I always though that author's solution to the alien problem also made no sense (although if you look at The War of the Worlds as just a fable, then it's okay).

18.) The Mist (2007). I've been watching this on and off on YouTube for the last three days - it sure is long! I've seen the film before, but could only remember the ending (of course!). Glad I didn't remember
the spider-like monsters! :O_O:
Can you say nightmare? The lead actor's voice grated on my nerves for some reason. Maybe I'm just grumpy. :(

14) Horror Express-(1972) No idea how I missed this one for all these years! Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Telly Savalas. Lee is a snooty archeologist who is bringing his 'proof of the missing link' back from Manchuria (I think. I lost track--lol). We have aliens, evolution, Rasputin, and skin-stealing monsters here :) Cushing and Lee play off each other beautifully, and Savalas is absolutely horrible (but funny) as a Cossack leader. I will definitely watch this movie again--loved it! (FTV)

15) Mulberry St. (2006)--Interesting idea taken a bit far. A virus begins with rat bites, then spreads as the infected start noshing on their fellow New Yorkers. Promoted like a zombie movie, but it's more of a contagion movie, and very believable given the close quarters in which many New Yorkers live. The music is hokey (hello, no budget for music) and one aspect of the infection is silly, but for all that it's an enjoyable movie. Far from looking like models dirtied up for a monster movie, the actors look like real people--I liked that a lot. The relationships felt real, especially the two old guys. There is animal killing (mostly rats, but one cat as well--it dies offscreen), and a downer ending, but still...I liked it! (FTV)

6- The Craft (1996) – I know I watch this one every year at this time. I can’t help it. Robin Tunney plays a new girl in town who falls in with 3 young girls who want to be witches. She completes their circle and they soon become more powerful than they can handle. Good campy fun!

7- Witchboard (1986) – Tawny Kitaen flirts with danger by using a Ouija board alone. Another blast from my past that is not a great movie, but near and dear to my heart. My first watch via You Tube! Thanks skimom2!

11. The Children (FTV)
A British family Christmas vacation with the relatives turns into a horror show when a mysterious virus turns the children into violent maniacs. This movie takes forever to get going, but if you can get through the setup, the last 40 minutes are very intense and delightfully bloody and worthy of some note. The problem with The Children is, ironically, the adults, who are without exception annoying dull-headed petty nitwits. It's hard to be scared for them when you don't like them. On the other hand, that just made it all the much better when they got what was coming to them, mwahahaha....

3 out of 5 stars.

Do you know, is this a remake of the 1980 The Children?
