13. Sheitan (FTV)
In French with subtitles. Four ravers meet a wild party girl who takes them out to the country where she lives with a deranged groundskeeper and other seemingly incestuous oddities. Things teeter between the comic and the menacing and the sexually weird before exploding into horrific violence. Actor Vincent Cassel carries most of the weight as the bad guy/weirdo Joseph, who plays one of the most hauntingly memorable roles I've seen this year in a horror film. The unven pace midway through and complete lack of sympathetic characters (everyone in it is pretty much a horrible person) keep this from being a 4 star film or higher, but this one has "cult audience" written all over it!

3.5 out of 5 stars.

This one looks interesting! Vincent Cassel is reliable as an actor--even if the movie is weird, he's good :) Did you find it on Netflix?

17) The Hamiltons (2006)-This one is GOOOOD. Family of young adults (mid 20s to older teen) moves from place to place often, and we're not quite sure why...until the middle brother attacks two women in his car and we see them chained up in the basement. I won't tell more, because half of the fun is figuring out what's going on. It definitely earns its 'R' rating, for gore and uncomfortable sexuality. The end is the kicker, though. You'll never look at your neighbors the same way again. 4.5/5 (it loses a bit because the main kid has some wooden moments). I'd definitely watch this one again. (FTV)

20.) The Tortured (2010). This movie received horrible reviews, but I thought it was decent. Assumed Jesse Metcalfe would be horrible, but he surprised me a little. The first 30+ minutes were heart wrenching. Could barely watch the last 40 minutes or so without covering my eyes. Such an incredibly sad premise, some less-than-believable circumstances, and a surprise twist at the end I doubt most would see coming. How far would the average person go for revenge or retribution? I'm torn - if anyone else watches this, please share your thoughts. It is available to stream on Netflix.

"Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children only dolls. And if you see her in your dreams, do not ever, ever scream."

This is a great movie.. one of the better recent ones (not that recent... but less than ten years old). I think it's pretty scary... and I watch it every year.
Some trivia... it has the same writer/director and producer of SAW .. when they show all her dolls, if you look, you will see the DOLL from SAW. (and his name is Billy also)
#48) Dead Silence (2007) 5 out of 5 stars

Throwing in the towel. No way I'll even make 10 at this rate....

No need to throw in the towel, just see as many as you can. It's not a contest but a horror movie celebration month. I'm behind my pace of previous years but I have a blast doing this.

I think the fun of this is being steered to see movies I might have otherwise ignored. By everyone commenting on what they've seen, it's a good way to discover some new flicks (and avoid some really horrible ones ;-D)

14. Rabies (FTV)
In Hebrew with subtitles. Four Israeli twenty-somethings crash into a weird situation in the woods, and before they know it they are deeply involved in violence, kidnapping and murder. A psycho cop & a serial killer lurk about, but death and violence manage to take on many different forms, even when the "bad guys" aren't around. Rabies is more of a violent thriller about escalation of violence when people's buttons are pushed under the right (or wrong) circumstances than it is an outright horror film, but the body count is high and blood plentiful. Rabies is excellently and artfully shot, and full of very dark humor that you may have to be an Israeli person to fully appreciate (surprise, I am not). The biggest problem though is the way that the story always feels forced and artificial, we're constantly made aware that we are watching a fictional construct shaped by a script writer. I give it points for being different, though.

3 out of 5 stars.
