5. Train to Busan (FTV)
Zombie apocalypse primarily set on a South Korean bullet train. This film shows there's still plenty of life left in the crowded and some would say tired zombie apocalypse genre. So many of my favorite horror films of the past dozen years or so have come from South Korea, and "Busan" fits right in with the best of them. If you've seen the trailer, you know there are over-the-top zombie mob chase scenes, which are quite effective. But the spectacle doesn't get in the way or cause the movie to distance itself from the audience, as so many other modern CGI-fests do. Even without the spectacle, TTB would work because it has real tension, real emotion and great characters to root for, and a few to root against. The people behave in ways that real people do, and the heroes have human flaws, which makes their acts of sacrifice all the more heart-wrenching. Great stuff!

4 out of 5 stars.

3) Nosferatu (1922) FTV – I had never seen this and didn’t realize that the folks who made it basically decided not to ask Bram Stroker’s family to use his story. They changed the names of all of the characters but followed the novel’s plot. Bram Stoker’s widow sued them and won, and most copies were destroyed. Count Orlock is creepy and there’s just something about a silent movie that makes me nostalgic. 4/5 for its time and just because!

My List:
1) Stir of Echoes (1999) - 3.5/5
2) Lights Out (2016)FTV - 3/5
3) Nosferatu (1922)FTV – 4/5
You just have to see Werner Herzogs remake of this. With Klaus Kinski, Bruno Ganz and Isabelle Adjani. Made in the 70,s i think. Masterly. same namn as the 1922 movie.

1. The Blood on Satans Claw.
2. Necromancy.
3. Earnest Scared Stupid.
4. John Dies at the End.
I like this one. Everything Necromancy missed doing right about a drug freakout this one did right. You don't know what is real or what is drug induced fantasy for quite a while. Folks take stuff called Soy Sauce at a party and it makes them see things. Many die. Later you find out why. I could have done with a prolonged period of confusion because they did it so well but at a point they decided to go all in. That was a mistake in my opinion and for the sake of a feel good conquering evil sort of turn. Confusion throughout would have worked better. It reminded me of the movie ExtenZe in that it's unreal but you don't know if it is unreal aspect. There is a bit of a surprise at the end. You guess.

1) Gerald's Game
2) Dead Rising: Watchtower
3) The Thing (1982)
4) Area 51
5) Piranha (1978)
6) Quarantine - US remake of REC. Lead was OK but became annoying by the end. Giving it 3.5/5 only because I liked the original and this wasn't the worst English-language remake out there.

I've decided to watch Friday the 13th at some point. Guess when? :biggrin2:

Ok - time to update the list so far as I've been away from the board for a couple of days. It looks like I should be rating these too, right? I neglected to do that earlier. To recap:

1) John Carpenter's The Thing 9/10 - One of the best remakes ever, and one of John Carpenter's finest achievements. It almost scores a perfect 10, but I try and reserve that one for the greatest movies.

2) Stakeland - 7.5/10 - Highly enjoyable take on the post-apocalypse genre featuring feral vampires instead of the usual zombies.

3) The Bride of Frankenstein 8/10 - I might take some grief over the rating, as it's considered by many to be far superior to the original. It's a classic, but I wouldn't rate it higher than say, the original Bela Lugosi Dracula.

4) The Crazies (2010) - 7/10 - not the Romero original, which I've never seen. The Crazies starts strong and creates some good tension, but goes off the rails a bit in the last act. Still worth seeing though.

5) Halloween H20. -8/10. This was a suggestion from my 14 year old for a re-watch. I have a weak spot for all things Michael Meyers (with the exception of the Rob Zombie remake, which I hated). The original Carpenter film is still my all-time favorite horror movie, which is really what keeps me coming back to the well. Most of the sequels are wretched, but this one has some genuine scares in it. Director Steve Miner has good chops and loads up on the jump scares. A decent cast certainly helps this one too. I've seen this one about 4 times now and it still makes me jump.

6. Wendigo (FTV)
NYC family on a getaway to the Catskills hit a deer, annoy a redneck and set a chain of events in motion involving a Native American spirit creature, the titular Wendigo. This is a Larry Fessenden film, so you know you're going to get a little bit more subtlety than the run-of-the-mill average horror thriller, as well as some cool editing and an overall creepy mood exploring the tensions between urban and rural folk. Great cast including a young Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle! However, this one is a bit too subtle for its own good, and takes quite some time to really get off the ground. And the Wendigo, let's face it, just looks like a guy in a deer costume running around on his hind legs, because that's exactly what it is. For fans of Fessenden though, there's enough going on to keep things watchable.

3 out of 5 stars.

Read somewhere that Jamie Lee Curtis has signed on for a new Halloween movie due out sometime next year. Got my fingers crossed on that one, I'll watch any of the Michael Myers movies, love 'em all.
