Metallica has a song on their album Death Magnetic called "Broken, Beaten and Scarred". It says repeatedly "That which don't kill ya, makes ya more strong" and "show your scars". It's about being proud n of what you've overcome and understanding that wishing away your past is wishing away who you are now. I've also had a few rough times and slept under the pier a few nights, in an alley, and some other places I'd rather not mention. As Rosie real said though, it makes you appreciate what you have now and that people need help sometime sand that doesn't make them a freeloader or a waste of space. In fact, it's in times of need, whether needing or helping, that the true nature of society and our humanity is revealed. The true measure of the stability and quality of any social construct is in how it deals with those that are the "least" among the group.
Anyone can be an asshat and overlook these truths, or consign them to people who "aren't trying hard enough" or "getting a handout". What's hard is to look past that and help someone and support policies and leaders who actually want to try to solve this difficult problem. Ancillary trickle down BS DOES NOT help this situation in ANY WAY. In fact, it creates more people needing help than it could ever help. Some people get that, and some don't. Check the political threads for the two viewpoints and you'll quickly see which philosophy is which.
