No matter what we cover it with it would start to melt. Also we had a black tom cat when I was growing up and no matter what you
cover it with or put it in he knock it off and lick away. After finding lick marks we put it in the fridge.

Ahhh, yes.
The article didn't mention slinky opportunistic felines ransacking the ol' Calcutta.

When I was a kid growing up in rural Pennsylvania we always had the butter dish out on the table, never in the fridge. We never got sick from it (that I know of anyway). I stopped leaving it out when I became an adult but now this article makes me think maybe I'll start leaving it out on the table as I hate trying to put cold, hard butter on toast, etc. What about you guys?
The Debate Is Over: Here’s the Truth About Refrigerating Butter
I have a nifty little dish that I keep mine in, for when it needs to be soft like spreading on bread. But I also keep some in the fridge for when I like to see it melt - like in oatmeal.

This is about margarine, not really related to butter, but I read that margarine is one molecule from plastic and can be left out on the back porch and no animal will bother it because it's not food. Don't think think I will test that, but thought it was interesting.

I use real butter for cooking and keep in in the fridge until I need it softened. We use I Can't Believe it's Not Butter Lite for toast, bagels, etc. and it spreads just fine.

As a kid, both grandmas would leave it out. No big deal.

What? I thought I had you converted to MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOve Over Butter?
