I had an acoustic neuroma removed about 16 years ago and it cost me the hearing in my left ear. I'm totally deaf in my left ear. The first couple of years after I lost hearing in that ear, I had some really weird things going on in situations with a lot of background noise(I guess my brain was adjusting and trying to help). I would be in a noisy restaurant and hear conversations people were having at other tables but struggled to hear the people at my table. I've adjusted to it and don't really notice except in situations with background noise. For instance, if I'm outside and there's background noise, someone can call my name and I have no idea where the sound is coming from. I hear it fine, I just don't know which direction to turn.
There's an implant I can get that uses the hearing from the other ear but so far I haven't felt the need. My hearing is fine in most situations. I do get a little embarrassed when strangers come up behind me on my bad side and talk to me (like standing in line at the store). Of course, I have no idea that they are there and many times they think I'm being rude.
