I missed it on the third but PBS is repeating S1E1 next Sunday so I set it to record. I havn't ever watched Downton Abby but y'all have made me curious. Am I going to be totally confused about what's going on since I havn't seen the first eight seasons?
Possibly--you'd really be missing a lot since this is basically a soap opera so everything has built on the previous 5 seasons. We had to get caught up 2 or 3 seasons ago as we'd missed the first couple and I don't think it would have made much sense jumping in. You can find them at this link if you don't mind watching on your computer--or maybe your TV system is set up to watch them through your TV instead.

Thanks :) I think I'll watch next week just to get the flavor of the show, then I'll see if I'm curious enough to watch the first seasons. Or... I might just ask y'all a million questions about what happened before causing whatever someone said or did

It's really worth watching them all if for nothing else than hearing Maggie Smith's zinger one-liners. ;-D

Loved those!
And it's a good thing Julian Fellowes resolved that the way he did! There would have been a lot of unhappy people and angry fan mail otherwise, I think. ;-D
That sounds like you might know something about angry fan mail.

I wondered though, if Mrs. Hughes would have actually asked Mrs. Padmore to talk to Carson about such a delicate matter back in the day. I wondered if that was "done" back then. Not the actual "doing" but the talking about it, especially inviting a third party into such an intimate conversation. Then I suspended my disbelief and had a wonderful time with the scene. So engaging... no pun intended.

I won't imbed them here because they're quite NSFW and sure to offend some, but if you want a laugh or 30, google "downton abbey" and "cards against humanity" -- there are two of them, one with Lady Edith, Mrs. Patmore and Mrs. Hughes and one with Lady Mary, Mr. Moseley, and Branson.
Watching now...

That was priceless! Thanks
One of the promos for Season 6 that I watched made me actually laugh out loud. Rob James-Collier, who plays Thomas Barrow, was explaining how the John Bates character was based on the Shaft character. No one understands him but his woman. Of course he was making that up, but it rang true and hilarious.

Prediction:

Lord Grantham is a walking heart attack. The need for a modern hospital will become paramount to this. He may die. Not sure about that, but his ticker is gonna blow. And of course, we see that Barrows is going to take over Carson's job. They have been testing him.
Good predictions!
I see a good opportunity for the hospital tie in, and a way to change Lady Violet's mind. I'm thinking he should survive, just because it would make me happy. And I hope your second prediction is true. As much as I try to not like Barrows, I can't help but to feel sorry for him.

I'm not so sure about a heart attack as he keeps complaining about stomach issues but there will definitely be something critical happening. I do like Patricia's idea of that being a part of the whole hospital arc and changing Violet's opinion. I don't think Carson removing his name meant he's going to leave. They're just moving out of the house. He'd probably spent the majority of his life in that house/room so leaving it would be sad for him. I thought more that Barrows is getting a bit of karma for all the mean-spiritedness he's had over the years.
